Hi ph'ers

Looking for a bit of advice. For the past few weeks my 06 plate 1.8 tdci focus has been very smoky (white smoke) and rough when started from cold. Once up to temp it was fine. On Sunday I was on the motorway and heard a bang. Basically the turbo stopped working and the engine management light came on. I managed to nurse the car home and don't know what to do next.

The car is on 150k miles and original turbo. I am hoping that it's maybe just an intercooler pipe or something similar but cannot hear any boost leak. I'm not mechanical at all and am not sure where best to take the car to have it checked over. I reckon if a reconditioned turbo is needed it may not be economical to repair although I'm not sure how much this would cost all in for parts and labour.

I can't drive the car too far as it's really bad on startup now and doesn't drive too well but could nurse it to somewhere local.

I'm in the Partick area of Glasgow. Any suggestions folks? Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Jon

I use a garage in Paisley. GT Automotive. I'm guessing that's possibly further than you'd want to drive the car in limp mode though?

I had problem with my mondeo had no boost it anything

Found a pipe that ran up at front of engine, was
Behind the exhaust manifold had burst. I had to
Remove the manifold ect to replace and was back
To normal after that. Happened at around 70 k miles

Thanks guys

Paisley isn't too far as it's not technically in limp mode. Once heated up it just drives like a 1.8 non turbo diesel. I'll give the place a call. Hopefully it is just a pipe thats come loose rather than the turbo going.

Kevin and Phil really know their stuff although they are currently planning a move to Cambuslang at the end of the month so might be worth giving them a phone rather than heading down.

Much appreciated Rob. Booked in for Saturday. Fingers crossed it's just a hose/pipe and not the actual turbo!

Hi Rob. KP autos are now in Cambuslang. Took the car there this morning. Diagnosed in 2 mins. Was a worn clip below the air filter that connected a hose to the turbo. Replaced in 20 mins. Very pleased with service and cost. Also very relieved!

Cheers
