HDMI over CAT5
Discussion
Hello All,
I'm currently re-jigging my home theatre setup and looking for some advice. Due to switching from a 'normal' sized AV Receiver to a behemoth of a thing (in comparison to the old one), I'm physically moving all my gear.
Everything is going in a server rack in a cupboard so nothing will be on display. While most things are pretty much controlled via an app, I was looking at using HDMI over CAT5 with the IR extenders so that the remotes can still be used thus making it woman friendly.
Am I right in thinking that use of HDMI over CAT5 means I can negate the need for connecting the AV Receiver and TV with an HDMI?
This seems to be the case, but don't understand if this option is more geared for splitting a signal, If ARC would still work, does it support 4K etc
I have no objection to running an HDMI, but if this option means I don't have to then I won't.
Thanks

It all depends what sort of HDMI extenders you buy. Some support ARC, IR and 4k and some dont ... also some will only provide a 1080p image if under a certain length. The decent Cat5e/Cat6 baluns are generally quite expensive so it could be more cost effective to us the HDMI and some sort of IR repeater. Can't answer your specific question, but I had a similar setup with Cat 6 baluns connecting my TV to my AV Amp (in another room) and then everything local to the amp on HDMI.
It handled full HD and all the CEC functionality between TV (Samsung), AMP (Denon) and Blu Ray (Panasonic) player meant that when watching blu ray i only needed to use the TV remote to control the amp volume and blu ray play/ff/rewind/pause functions.
Worked really well.

I have a similar setup to what you are proposing, with a 30m run and a 50m run over cat6 using Neet HDMI Baluns with IR, a solution at the cheaper end of the market.
It works pretty well, I get the very occasional flicker when someone flashes a light on and off and the IR repeaters can take a bit of setting up, getting them correctly configured, but it does what it says on the tin.
