Wrong details on offer of fixed penalty
Discussion
I need a little help if possible of what to do...I've just received the conditional offer of fixed penalty through the post but it has the wrong registration plate on it, instead of MYS it has HYS as the last three letters of the number plate.
I was driving the car with MYS when i was pulled over for speeding (92.40 on a motorway), I sat in the officers car and handed over my driving license, he then took my details. (I didn't technically admit to driving that speed as he only questioned whether I knew the speed limit of the motorway, after that question we pretty much talked about SAABs, as I was driving 9-3 Aero at the time)
On the yellow receipt which I was given, you could make the mistake of either believing it is a H or a M.
Now my question is... Do i try it on or just face the £100 fine and three points?
Has anybody else had a similar problem?

If you believe you're not guilty of the speeding, take it to court.
I would say the chances of you getting off the speeding due to the registration error on the offer of fixed penalty are around 0.00005%. Give or take.
The error will be easily explained in court.
edit: layman advice, not a lawyer

That's pretty much what I thought.
It's the first time in twenty years of driving I've been pulled over for speeding so I was just going to pay the fine and send my license but a friend questioned the mistake on the letter.
Yes, I could give money to solicitor and risk it but the downside would probably be a higher fine and more points for trying it on.
Thanks for the quick reply.

So, having pleaded not guilty, when you're standing there in court, and you say "But my car is MYS, not HYS" to the magistrate, and the prosecution produce the original slip - with your name, address, licence details on it...?Take the FP.
It's a legal document and has to be correct, so I was led to believe. I got a a parking ticket with one letter of the reg wrong, pointed out that I didn't own a car with the reg supplied, and it was binned.
Slightly different situation to yours admittedly, in that all they had was the reg.
