oil whats best?

Need top up with oil or do an oil change. Whats the best for a chim 4.0L. I have lots suggested inc magnatec but then someone else said that magnatec was a little thin when hot etc etc.

DON'T top up unless you know what oil is already in there!

Best bet is to do an oil change. Mobil 1 Motorsport 15-50 works well in the 4 litre.

Are you doing the job yourself?

have a dig around in the searches and you'll find extensive discussions on this.

Do check, but my non techie, summary, recollections are that anything less than 15/40 is a bit pissy, and makes various noises dominant in the engine. Also the engine doesn't like overfilling.

I put the same as Austech put in at the last service, valvoline semi synthetic 15/40.

FWIW, I agree with Jem. I've always gone with the David Batty/Austec line that 15/40 semi-synth is the stuff to go for.

I've switched to Silkolene Pro S and I've noticed much less oil use than Mobil 1 Motorsport - and it is slightly cheaper too.

I used to use Synta fully synthetic from VAG.

About £15 for 5L from Skoda or £25 from Audi.

Absolutely stonking oil, fulfils all the same tests as Valvoline, Mobil 1, etc.,

Without wishing to ease the top of the can marked worms, I think we all agree Mobil 1 0-40 is too thin, too expensive and hard to find.

I found the Synta gave better hot oil pressure and burned a lot less than Mobil 1.


Just my 2p worth. Everyone has a favorite.

I use Valvoline fully synthetic 5W-50 as I figure best to use the viscosity that TVR recommed. I get it from my local car accessory shop.

Heres a different oil then....

I use Shell fully Synth as thats what Offords put in at the last service.

Is this my imagination but I seem to top up less than when it had Mobile 1 in it...

does magnatec just hold the metal crap in the oil, shouldn't you use a magnatised sump plug and non magnatised oil?

Yeah seem to remember my old mini ## years ago would have loads of metalic particals on the magnetic sump plug. Made me wonder where it would be otherwise........ About the only good thing British Leyland kept on their cars.
