There's nothing I can say about this that would come close to expressing my utter contempt and disbelief....

many of the areas devasted by the Tsunami are dependent on Tourism, it is to their benefit if Tourism resumes as soon as possible. Do you think it helps the Maldives for instance-where virtually the only industry is Tourism if everyone stays away for a few years?.

I was going to say "I bet they're Russians" in a slightly racist sort of way, but I see it's a Belgian site, right?

However...

Could I put another perspective, for your consideration.

The place where these pics was taken probably has a very high reliance on tourism as one of its main industries. The local inhabitants have suffered an awful lot already. They will suffer anyway. They will continue to suffer even more if the tourists don't come and spend money.

Every bit of profit that they can make out of selling bottles of beer to fat europeans is a blessing!

Neil I agree that this looks wrong and that the people concerned appear not to give a stuff about what has happened but they may have had not choice. Most insurance companies will not pay out unless a higher authority i.e. goverment, etc says that people should not travel to any specific country or location.
Also, many of the countries affected by the tsunami rely on tourism for their income. They need people to go on holiday to get back on their feet independantly.
However, I don't think that I could just sit there among the devastation and get a tan. I would end up doing some sort of work during my time there.

Wouldn't you get off your sunbed and help, though?

I know I couldn't just lie there in the sun and drink beer all day.

That was what enraged me. I cannot understand how you could just lie back and drink beer while all this goes on around you.

Nail, head, Jaglover.

Maldives economy relies upon:

Tourism
Fishing
Agriculture

I know because I've been there four times, the last time was just three weeks ago

Take away the tourism and I can tell you that the bits of agriculture have all been washed away, things don't tend to grow when they've been dowsed in sea water. That leaves over a quarter of a million people depending on fish - that ain't good news.

If you want to help - go to these places on holiday, they'll appreciate what the dollars can do for them.

Good point.

But I bet the Belgians were a bit pissed off when they got to the beach and found that the Germans had already put their towels on the best sunloungers.
