Genuinely reliable used cars
Discussion
I want to gauge what there is around if I were to jump to another car. Would have to be sub 1k.
I've currently got a K engined ZR and whilst it doesn't give me problems now, I'm sick of watching the levels. I don't condone lazy car ownership but would love to jump into something and not have to check everything like a hawk.
I've been thinking an old civic? Not sure about VW's as I don't rate they're actually reliable. A modern KIA or something might get me.

My dad's has an old 1.5 civic aerodeck for bloody years now. Averages 40mpg a bit less in winter. Reliability wise it had a battery blow up (literally lol but that was just as it was old, not the cars fault), taking water in through the blowers when really really wet and a resistor on the blower dial going meaning it only worked on 3 and 4.
Otherwise been perfect. I had a civic type r for 18 months and had a similar record with reliability although they will be out of your price range. They really are fantastic cars the Hondas.

Oh god this! Mine just wouldn't die. It failed its MOT for rust twice but only needed minor welding, the 2nd time around I sold it for £100 to my mechanic friend who then gave it to one of his customers whos aparently driven it for another 2 years lol. Did about 10k miles on it and I dont think I ever so much as put oil into it.Like a cockroach

So much depends on the luck of the draw. Our company run their cars until they are uneconomical to repair.
Cars that stand out as being impossible to kill included MK3 Mondeo diesels, Toyota Avensis, Pug 407 to name a few. The worst we had were VAG cars.
Our most common car right now are MKIV Mondeos but they are not as good as the MK3.
All the above is based on regular servicing. One Mondeo we had was sold with over 250k miles but died with a knackered fuel pump when the plonker who bought it tried to run it on chip oil!

Toyota Avensis or similar with a 1.8 or 2.0 petrol engine, buy one off an mature bloke who has had it since new and serviced it regularly and only done relatively low miles. Will bore you ridgid but will most probably do another 200k.
Old Mercs were always the benchmark but are now too old as a rule, even W124s are getting a bit rusty in certain places, ones after 2000 are rusty from new and recent ones are too complicated and expensive.

Been in the exact same scenario where I needed a runaround albeit reliable for under a grand.
Can't recommend a 90s Civic enough. Any engine. Can't go wrong with the 1.4's and 1.5's. EG (if you can find one) or EK for maximum cheapness.
I had three throughout my uni days and never spent a penny on repairs on any of them. Serviced at home myself (was certainly a learning curve!!).

This basically. Things like bushes, wheel bearings and exhausts will eventually wear out on everything eventually. I've had loads of sub £1k stuff asnd overall I've found things like reputation, service history or mileage don't really come into it.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
