Hi I've been sent what appears to be a Italian speeding ticket. It will be from my holiday in September.
Its in Italian I scanned at and up loaded it but its in pdf formt.
I tried to put it through google translate but that does not work.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to translate it and find out what the damage is.
cheers

If it's a hire car then the fine will be taken from your credit card automatically (When you sign for hire cars, buried in the small print is a statement where you authorise the hire car company to take any additional payments required to cover such motoring fines).

Unlikely. This isn't in the terms of the hire car companies I use - apart from an admin fee of £35 or similar. Which hire car company does this?

DVLA will not provide your details to foreign states. To get your details you must either be stopped at the roadside (when immediate payment or a deposit is usually demanded) or in a hire car.

If you've got a smart phone or a tablet, there's an app called "Word Lens", which will give you a rough translation. You point the camera at the document and IT translates IT there and then for you. It's by no means super accurate but it may give you an idea.

The hire company will not pay a speeding fine any more than they would over here, they will simply pass the details onto the relevant authority, that is why he now has a ticket, What it is saying in the small print is that they have the right to charge you an admin fee to deal with the ticket and pass your details on.

I got a speeding ticket in Italy about 4 years ago and got charged admin fee by Avis but heard nothing more. I think that They have to send it to you in English if your address is in England, they cannot assume you speak Italian.

I have heard nothing more

We didn't have enough money for tolls in Italy about 20 years ago, before the Eurozone, and they hunted us down and kept raising the fee until we caved and paid it (about £120 then) but the speeding ticket has appeared to have gone away.

The speeding ticket itself should go in the bin.

If some sort of "admin" charge has been added to a credit card, report it as an unauthorised transaction and get it reversed.

At the very least the hire car company will have to spend a fair amount of time justifying their actions - which will cost them more than the admin charge - just so they can keep the money. And they can't add anything else on.

It could easily be a scam.

What a load of tosh, they are perfectly within their rights to make a reasonable admin' charge to deal with paperwork and you will have accepted the same when you signed their terms and conditions.

I had the letter translated by a friend of mine.
They want 139 euros if paid within 5 days and 185 if paid later.
They also requested a copy of my licence to put points on.Which is very nice of them.
I've not found any info to that points can be applied but i belive the agreement relating to this does not start until 2017.
We have not figured out how its paid either.

Points will not be put on your UK licence even after 2017. It just involves the exchange of information so fines can be sent to the RK of the car.

As to whether you want to pay the fine; are you planning on going back to Italy?

I may be incorrect, but is it not the case that the letter has to be in a language you understand to be enforceable?

So, and assuming I'm correct, you can totally ignore the thing?

Criminal proceedings must be in your language. However, many EU states deal with speeding, etc as an administrative matter. So, not a good idea to ignore it on the basis of the language.

When the new cross-border enforcement system is extended to UK (in May 2017) then the correspondence must be in the language of the state in which the target vehicle is registered.

08/03/15 and assuming a UK driving license.

C/C on file then they'll try and take it plus admin costs

Other than that file in the bin.

Either way the s need to work harder to steal from anyone prepared. wink
