thought id complain about my cars MPG, Basically today i went from Manchester to London round trip (420 mile journey)

as i am the sort of person that just enjoys driving, soo i put my car on cruise control at 55mph behind a truck all the way and same on the return journey

on the way back i thought why not reset the trip meter to see what MPG my car is giving

it turned out 68 MPG, i cant believe this C220 Automatic, just checked autotrader and a similar car to mine is supposed to do 53 mpg

the 68 mpg sounds about right because i put £45.00 diesel in and still have around £10 left so used around £35

i usually see people on here complaining about real mpg vs manufacturer mpg

oh i would like to ask one question aswel. i did the round trip and my thermostat never went past 60 degrees, usually should be at 90 degrees, is this going to cause damage to the engine?

You picked the exact situation where a car will get its best mpg - my impreza used to see 27-28 mpg in those conditions compared to 13-15 in mixed driving, my megane reports over 50mpg if i sit at 60 too.

Its unlikely to do any harm as i assume its not labouring - i do suspect your thermostat is broken though

cars driven on a long run at 60mph or less with little or no stopping or slowing will always be able to smash the official mpg figure
not the same for electric vehicles though

I also suspect your thermostat is broken

If you want to know what the car does to the gallon then a fill to fill is the only way , the obd figures are rarely reliable , nor is your method of mpg based on fuel cost

To offset such a miracle, you must immediately purchase a second car...
(V8-engined one will do).

Every car I have ever had will smash the official "mixed" MPG figures doing this, it's what the "extra urban" figure represents. I can get well into 60+ MPG from my C70 D5 doing this.

Also I have found some cars have extremely accurate fuel economy computers and others are miles wide of the mark. Only way to know for sure is, as people say, to work it out manually. If your computer tracks your calculations accurately you can start trusting it.

I did this in my Renaultsport Clio and managed 41.2mpg over 200 miles once. The onboard readouts on mine was consistently 1-2mpg lower than real life too.

Don't really care much for mpg any more, I think my whole fleet manage 45+ biggrin

You were probably being dragged along in the trucks slipstream.

Don't care how much mpg I could get. I'd rather poke my eyes out with a fork than drive like that.

Sometimes I quite like driving like that especially if I'm not in a rush or have an appointment. I cruise along listening to music.

ahah yes i agree most may find it boring behind a truck for 4/5 hours. it was not directly behind truck to avoid stone chips, probably around 100 meters

i actually enjoyed it. no stress, music was on full, singing along, enjoying all the nice cars flying past in the fast lane.

should i worry about the thermostat being broken? because i cant afford to repair at the moment or is it possible to get it changed after a month or so without engine being damaged, just spent £650 on electric steering lock problems these W204 come with.

well i think so, the courier company said they will deliver the parcel to me in Manchester

i said no, I'm coming to collect it ! just so i had a reason to go on a long drive

EDIT:
my normal mpg is a silly number near 20mpg, i blame sport the button and rear wheels, hence why im shocked at 68mpg smile

Use all the money you are saving on fuel and capital letters, that should easily cover the cost.

I used to do a long journey twice a week and once I decided to try just sitting in the inside lane with the trucks and cruising along. Great fuel economy, arrived at the other end more relaxed and far less tired than normal but my god it was boring! It also took me an hour longer than normal and an hour of sitting at 50 - 55mph just isn't fun.

Just to add my four pennyworth so all you throttle hooligans can call me a w''nk'r. At 85 MPH you are using TWICE as much fuel as you are at 60MPH. Keeping a cars revs at or below 2000 RPM will always give you the best MPG. (This is the reason that trucks never rev more than 1500RPM because it gives them the best economy).

Behind a truck you will have zero airstream & even reversed airstreams, effectively giving you a bonus tailwind. To be fair this is about as near to real life you can get to the official figure drive cycle driving.

A gen1 Honda insight is just about in lean burn at that speed so 130mpg is on the cards with a tailwind. Ideal for cheapskates.

If your car has a DPF then you need to think about getting it done sooner rather than later ideally, it won't regenerate at 60 deg and will get more and more clogged. My mate's E60 did something similar and it cost a bit to put right.

Now thats something i did not think about. hmmm true, engine management light comes on and off randomly, most likely to do with the thermostat. Back to the specialist frown

thanks

The car won't be making any soot at 50mph so won't block the dpf. Though it probably won't regen either. I think you need a few miles cruising at full engine temp to regen i.e. 70ish mph.
