Which Mercedes engine to go for?
Discussion
Hi all
Im considering a Mercedes after years of Audi ownership mainly due to finding a decent auto Audi being so hard!
Are there any 1.8/2.0 petrol or Diesel engines which are known up be very good or very bad (in the sub 4 year old Mercs)?
Again same question re the auto boxes?
I'm looking at either a C class coupe or possibly a CLA.

I would opt for a c250 (same basic 2.2 as the 200 and 220) but has better performance with no less mpg.(the c350 is faster still but its a 3.0 so far less economy). Around 4 years ago merc did have a few issues with faulty injectors these should have been changed out for better ones by now but I would check they had been on any car I was looking to buy

Anyone got any real world experience of the petrol engine in the c200 c class?
If you are talking about the new engine then I have it in a auto, so far after 700 miles I am getting 32mpg but that is all city driving, I am going to see what it foes in Eco mode just for curiosity as it is not a nice drive in that modejonny996 said:

I am used to getting about 42-44 mpg from my diesel octavia vrs estate and the quoted combined mpg for that is 49 in comparison to the 51 for the c200 estate.
If the real world for the merc was 40-42 mpg this would put the running costs very close to my skoda.
My commute has recently increased to 23 miles each way but this is mostly on a roads at off peak times so not to heavy in terms of traffic. I know the quoted mpg figures are not reliable but i would hope to get fairly close.
I have had honda type-r's in the past and usually managed 90% plus of the quoted mpg but when i had an evoque i only managed about 70% of the quoted figure. 80 to 85% of the quoted figure for the merc would be acceptable to me.
The gear box in the new manual C class is terrible IMHO pick - up is slower than the auto and that is coming from someone who drives both regularly. I have the 7G transmission in my S204 and it is far better, a delight actually. Both diesels are bi-turbo with plenty of usable power. Buy one you will not regret it.

Thanks. Auto is an absolute must, I wouldn't buy another manual diesel.
