Having had a bit of time on my hands this morning, I found myself browsing round a few websites looking at the above watches, and cannot decide between the steel ones (white faced with batons) or the bi-metal, again white faced, though possibly gold on this model.

They are very similarly priced at the moment and, with the strength of the pound, seem a good buy from European sources.

Are there any advantages/disadvantages, or is it just a matter of taste really? I'm not really one for showy stuff, though I'm thinking that the bi-metal could wear well with a jacket, and I have several steel banded watches already so thinking that a change may be good.

It's not going to be for an investment or anything like that, (I learnt that a long time ago) just to be worn on occasions when I fancy a change.

Finally, would I be better with an early one with the Zenith movement, or going for a later one with the Rolex one?

Cheers for that, assumed it would be just down to taste.

I've been looking s/hand and not new though and have found a couple of nice ones, in particular a bi-metal one with the steel face which looks quite interesting though need to do a bit more research yet.

Good luck with yours, I bought my 116400GV from Iconic, very good people to deal with. smile

Absolutely agree.

I've probably decided now, or at least 85%, the next thing is buying private or from a dealer?

I've found one which ticks all the boxes, but it's from a private seller in Germany. We've exchanged a few emails and he certainly seems genuine enough, though has not responded since I asked for photos. Having said that, it's Saturday evening and he's possibly out somewhere, though if he doesn't get back by Monday I'll probably give him a miss.

Any comments on Zenith or Rolex movements?

If you get a black dialled steel version and add a two tone white dial you can have two very versatile watches....

Oh and by the way, let me know what you can source a pre owned example for as I may let mine go....full uk watch bought from Ernest Jones a couple years back...

I turn 50 in 2016 and am planning to trade up from my ss datejust to a ss daytona so watching this thread with interest. Like the op I'm open to buying private or dealer, not particularly bothered if pre--owned or new. I wear my Rolex every day.

Any words of wisdom from the PH collective much appreciated but don't try to talk me out of a Daytona - got my first Rolex when I was 21, strongly suspect the Daytona will be the last watch I ever buy hehe

I just like them really, always have done, and have wanted one for a long time.

I've looked all over the place in the last few weeks and have now decided that it's going to be a bi-metal with either a white or grey/steel dial. The bi-metal ones seem to be either on par or slightly cheaper than the steel ones, though this has not skewed my decision. This is based purely on looks. I have also decided that I'll be going for the Rolex movement and not the Zenith based on a lot of reading. Nothing against the Zenith one, just want the later model as I haven't got a chronograph with the seconds sub dial at the bottom. smile

I know that they're not to everyone's taste, and there are probably better watches out there, but I've been after one for the last couple of years, though only half heartedly looked until the last couple of months.

There seems to be an awful amount of choice, and I'm presently just looking at European ones due to the strength of the pound at the moment, though by the time I've factored in exchange rates and bank charges there's not as much in it as it initially looks.

The one I was looking at yesterday seemed to be a superb watch, though the guy's still not come back to me, so I'm a bit more concerned now than I was about that. If he doesn't reply when I'm asking him questions, what's he going to be like if anything goes wrong?

Back to rooting round the web again this morning.

I was going to go for a play out in the car to relax a bit, but it's just started snowing/sleeting here so I'll forget that today.

I like the bimetallic. Out of interest, is there a link you have to a website showing the pros and cons of the two movements?

Luckily the Daytona wears quite flat to the wrist and sits quite unobtrusively ,

To paraphrase Douglas Adams; this is obviously a new use of the word "unobtrusive" of which I was not previously aware...

Just to update, found one I liked with the contrasting coloured dials. Found three actually.

1. In Germany. Steel/Grey dial £5,700 private sale.

2. In London. Champagne dial. £6,750 dealer

3. In Switzerland. Champagne dial. £6,200 dealer.

The German one was nice, looked the part with full set and was a private collector (allegedly). The guy was pleasant in his email correspondence, though seemed to prefer a face to face deal with cash. Can't say I blame him really. I was also reluctant to send a lot of money to an anonymous person who I've met on the internet.

The one in the UK was advertised as full set, though I had a feeling that it may not quite have been exactly right, especially as he insisted that it had all the original links when, from the photos, there was at least one missing...

The Swiss one again has all box and papers, has been checked over by them (I suppose they all say that wink) and has never been polished. This was the bit that pleased me more than anything, mainly knowing that all the metal which it started with is still there. After several emails and questions, it has now been paid for so I've now got a nervous week or two waiting for it to arrive.

ETA: Seller just been on to confirm that payment has been received, and to expect the watch on Wednesday. It's being posted from France to avoid any unnecessary customs prodding apparently.
