Old bottle of wine

I've had this bottle of wine at the back of the cupboard and noticed it was made in 1989 - is it anything special or just good for the sink?

Nothing too clever, £13 on winesearcher, crack it open tonight and its probably perfectly drinkable with a lump of cheddar.

That's good to know, it's not exactly been kept in cellar conditions so wouldn't want to have potentially destroyed something valuable!

Hmm my local Tescos all of a sudden have some expensive Tesco Finest wine sin the £20 + bracket,,,,, I wouldn't put one on the table advertising I shop at Tesco at that price...... guess its never judge book by its cover, BUT that's what would happen with guests

That is one of the first wines I had on my first wine tasting, was alright back then.

Next time you have your ever so sophisticated dinner party guests over get them to blindfold taste a £5 Tesco red & a £20 French white both at room temperature.
I'd be interested to know if they can tell which is the cheap wine, or for that matter, which is red & which is white.

I won't dispute that, maybe I am snob, BUT I just would not a bottle of wine on the table with Tesco splashed across it.

People like different things, be that £5 or 1k a bottle, doesn't bother me as long as you enjoy. I agree there is a lot of dross about at £10-15 but much the same at £5, you can get really good examples of both.

I have attended loads of blind tastings and I would say I have a good palate and can taste the different grape varieties and comfortable blending. I drink bottles of wine day to day under £8 a bottle but on a special occasion a Meursault or a nice claret. I can almost guarantee most people would choose a Mersault over a £5 bottle of Chardonnay, happy to be proven wrong

I took the foil off and the cork was red so I'm guessing that's not a good sign!

You'd know straight away if it was corked as the bottom of the cork would be greyish-blue & the wine would stink like rancid mushrooms. So long as no air got it & the temperature it was stored in was reasonably stable you should be fine

Well, I have put it out of its misery and it was had with dinner. Tasted nice but not amazing to me, didn't taste off though. Hic!

Tesco do a wine fair in London every year, you can get some very nice wines there.
