I saw this Mercedes parked on its owners drive near my home. The car is a 58 plate and is scabbed all along the bottom half with rust. It really is worthless scrap the vehicle is so bad. I'm guessing the fact he has paid for a large banner points towards him not being too happy about it lol

I'm just old enough to remember rusty 70's Italian cars but they were only briefly something I was aware of. For a PHer of my generation, if I think of a rusty car, I think "Late 90's Mercedes C Class". Mercedes had truly lost their way in this regard; I think they've got their quality control better sorted now but only another decade will truly tell there. I can understand why makers of (circa) 95-00 vintage Mercs would be very hacked off.

Edit: Sorry, thought you said 98 and just twigged the 58 plate... getmecoat

That was my initial thought. However if he's gone to the trouble and expense of the banner being made up. He has in all likely hood had the issue investigated. Even a total muppet wouldn't blame a brand because he had been tucked up with a badly repaired lemon ( unless of course he purchased it from a main dealer of course).

Unless a bad repair there's no excuse for this in modern cars.

Hmmm, are you sure its as young as a 58 plate?

I personally dont think the photo resembles any Mercs that were in production in 2008/2009, and the problems Mercedes had with rust occured years beforehand.

Would be interested to see a better photo.

Hard to see from that pic but I would guess an old 90s S class? Certainly doesn't look anything remotely new.

The vans seem to rust badly as well.

How old is the picture? I'm guessing it's an old pic from Merc's dark days in the late 90s.

I took the picture about three hours ago. I noticed the banner and stopped for a look. I couldnt get any closer because I didnt want to go onto the guys property. I'm sure the plate was a 58? if I get a chance I will look again next time I go past. I would be surprised if it was a 98

There's also a small child poking out of the grille, bet that messes up the drag co-efficient

I saw a 52 plate merc c200 (or whichever) at some traffic lights the other day and from front to back along the edges of all panels there was spots of rust - bottoms and endges of door, wheelarches, even where the rear tail light meets body work. I would suspect it wasn't pretty underneath.

Does make you wonder if they have sorted it out on more recent models.

That does look like an older Mercedes in the picture, so far as I can tell.

I know someone with an 57 Mercedes CLS which has some rust on it. It is a one owner car which has never been in an accident - so it is not unknown for Mercedes built after 2005 to rust. The P-leather on the seats is breaking down in places too. It's only done an average mileage.

I don't doubt Mercedes have improved from the utterly dire quality cars they were producing in the late 1990s to early 2000s, but their quality is still well down on the glory days.

That's a 98 0r 2000 S Class not a 08 & these are known for rusting

I'm going to have to go and double check. If its a 58 fair enough to moan, if its a 98 he's a bit of a muppet for kicking off about a seventeen year old car
