F30 318d vs Golf 1.6TDI real world MPG Diffrence
Discussion
Considering changing my f30 318d 140bhp to a 2014 golf 1.6 tdi. Power aside would the golf be much more economical, i do 30k a year of pretty much nothing but round town driving, The amount of motorway miles i do is very small and the 318d averages 46mpg no matter how hard i drive it. What would you expect a golf 1.6 TDI to do in comparison? I don't care what it will do on a run or if you drive it with economy in mind etc like i say the 318d won't drop below 46mpg no matter how hard i drive it whats the lowest the golf should drop to?
I can't imagine any situation were the extra costs of a new car are offset by greater economy. Once you are doing say 45mpg, the jump to 65mpg doesn't really save you much money unfortunately.
The only significant saving would come from buying an EV and then getting the tax benefits! (ie 100% right down of the full cost in year one etc)

Absolutely this.At 30k p/a your fuel costs are (assuming diesel at 115p a litre):
40 mpg £3,920.93
45 mpg £3,485.27
50 mpg £3,136.74
55 mpg £2,851.58
60 mpg £2,613.95
I have an F30 330d. It does probably 65% motorway, the rest a mix of town and B road. It always gets a chance to warm up on each journey as my commute is about 40 miles each way. I don't drive it too hard everywhere, but it does go in sport fairly often and Its averaged 42 mpg over 12k, which I'm more than happy with for the performance. Amazing the difference town / motorway makes if that's the mpg your getting around town.

Hmm Interesting, doesn't make as much difference as i thought and makes me think i may as well stick with or get something else i actually prefer. At 30k p/a your fuel costs are (assuming diesel at 115p a litre):

Any chance you or anybody else can work out the difference between 45mpg diesel to 30mpg petrol based on 20k per year (not 30) ( i absolutely suck at maths) Thanks!

you give me faith that there are still good kind helpful people in this world.Edit Found a website that does it for you
