Gen II Cayman S - short shifter cable snap (ANOTHER ONE!!!)

I have read a lot of on this subject. Why o why wont Porsche sort this out? Didn't they recall the Gen 1s?

Driving along around 30mph as pulling away from a roundabout. Gear stick goes all floppy. Trapped in third. Cannot find any gear. Somehow managed to limp home navigated some hairy slowing into traffic and lights.

Had to be recovered off my drive (embarrassing) and then £700 bill as not in warranty. (Although Porsche should just settle it themselves as ongoing dispute). Confirmed its the cable @ OPC.

Vehicle is 6 years old and only done 27,000 miles. No tracking and most of the 10,000 I've done been motorway miles.

All in all pretty shocking!

I was just going to stick up a thread asking about preventative maintence on this exact issue.

Imagine being in lane 3 of a busy motorway to find your car suddenly in neutural.

It does occasionally worry me.

Anyway, how do you get it recovered on and off the truck and in the garage when its stuck in gear. Sit in it dip the clutch while others push?

These are seen as being a permanent fix and are highly regarded over on Planet9. Not sure if they have any UK distributors though.

Yes they're not cheap and not something I would consider unless the car is a keeper.

Cheers mate. Yes it sucked.

To add to it I live in a dead end cul-de-sac so car was backwards to recovery truck. Guy did a good job me putting in neutral and clutch down and gently winched on.

The motorway scenario doesn't bear thinking about. Seems they always trap in gear as it would need to happen as changing.

On the gen 1 cars they not only snap but they can jump out of the retainer at the gearbox end so some recommend using strong tie cables to stop that happening. Not sure if the same design on the gen 2 but may be worth checking.

Why is it that any mention of gen 1 caymans, no matter how unrelated, has the ph regulars mentioning bore scoring etc, it's like a sickness!

Hi folks,

I read about this one on planet9 while doing some background research before buying my car, and seeing the OP posting yesterday brought it all back. Not the sort of thing you expect with a Porsche and it does seem to have been around for a few years now.

But I can't get my head round how common it is. Is it "TADTS", 1 in 10, 1/100 or 1/1000 ? Mine's a 2.9 from 2009, should I be scrabbling around underneath with new cables before I get stranded ?

I did think similar but at £700 a pop and warranty to boot I don't want to replace them if they are not broken but I am interested in a preventative fix.

I'd hate to have my day ruined or put in danger over something some stupid as a gearshift cable.

Mines an '09.

I don't think there is an exact science or mileage.... which is why I would argue Porsche should do something about it. The OPC saying (and I know they don't wanna drop themselves in it ) "Well these cables get pushed and pulled around over the years and ultimately break...." is not really a logical statement/argument.

I am in the midst of a complaint with Porsche whereby they have already sorted a £1000 out in new brake discs because of an error and will now have to stump up £700 for this. But id rather have not had the ball ache of being stuck on side of a road or risk a motorway trap in first or something.

My argument is during 111 point check, knowing that this is a worldwide issue, why the f**k they don't check the cable!!!! OR sort it out and recall the cars!

Knowing something and admitting to it are two entirely different things, especially when it comes to Porsche.

Its very simple. Cost.

They could have recalled all of the M96 and M97 engines too.

Yes I have to agree. But - its a stick I can beat more money out of them with.

I got mine for free... so I guess no real loss. But they will be warrantying cars they have f**k all clue if they have any immediate faults!! Not a great business plan!

Id like house insurance please.... yes no problem we wont ask any questions and just give you a premium.... *calls a few days later with subsistence and flood damage* :-/

I had this happen in my 987 2.7, very annoying but only cost £300 to fix at GT1 in Chertsey & my warranty paid for it too, I was with Warranty Wise at the time it was in 2009.
