Mrs just got dropped off by traffic police.  Our car is in the painters so we are using the father inlaws, turns out those s at hastings direct remove the ability to drive any other car third party. You now have to ask for it!!! Yes i know we should have read the small print and policy doc but you don't expect something so basic to be an add-on!!

Lesson learnt the hard way, 6points and £300 :-(.  But at least the Bobby was a nice guy and understanding, he gave the Mrs a lift home, didn't impound the car and waited while i insured it and gave me a lift to pick it up.

Assumption is the mother of all fkups.

Remember this. Especially when dealing with insurance companies.

It's been this way for quite a while now. Lots of people still assume it's part of their policy but your experience goes to show those days are gone. Sorry to hear you got caught out.

Going to be absolutely no help but the last few years I have avoided a lot of firms due to the terms and conditions. Rather pay for a good policy than chase the pennies, I read the lot now after one policy had a few things in, and a few things lacking, that I noticed after taking it out. I did not like them and they are one of the many large firms in the ads on TV.

Sorry, no help I know.

I thought it was common knowledge that most policies no longer included this. It's been the case now for several years.

Is it really not highlighted anywhere that they dropped it - it's just there last year and gone this?

I'm presuming the car is insured by FIL - in which case what brought it to the cop's attention? It wouldn't have shown on ANPR as un-insured.

Hastings are the single worst company I've ever had to deal with, they won't ever see a penny of my money again.

ours has done this too. Now 20 quid extra if you want that facility. Allianz.

It got generally dropped a few years ago under pressure from the Government, but then most firms put it back (but usually limited to over 25's) due to their policyholders getting caught out in exactly the way the OP's missus did.

I wondered why they pulled it, quite unlucky if it's just a random stop.

I thought this was usually included in insurance. I'll be checking mine when I get home.

Not much help to the OP but I always confirm this on each renewal, just to be on the safe side.

As people have said it's been a long time since it was the norm to have drive any car cover; many companies offer it for over-25s only but many don't.

We honestly had no idea. Something that basic i would never imagined being stripped. Never mind, could of been worse, she could of crashed. I shall be looking for another insurer tomorrow.

They do random stops near us (gatwick), they saw it was a woman and car registered to a bloke so decided to delve deeper. Never mind, lesson learnt.

I'm 37 and I don't think I've ever had this sort of cover on any policy, used the be the case with fully
Comp when I was a kid, but always had tpft. Since having fully comp policies from somewhere in my twenties I've not had and 3rd party only cover on other cars.

Still, massive ball ache for the OP, insurance renewal is not going to be fun next time around frown

I'm 38 and fairly certain I've always had it, at least when doing a cursory check and noticed it. Renewal is going to be a major ball ache. :-(

My Hastings policy still allows me to drive other cars. I didn't request it or pay more for it.

Really? That's odd. Mrs shall give them a call tomorrow and ask. Fingers crossed but the screen in his vehicle clearly stated NO other car cover.
