Insurance question, automatic renewal
Discussion
I have just discovered that Mrs Chris's car insurance was automatically renewed, on the 15th.
She forgot to cancel it, it's way more than she should pay, (over £200 more)I have checked on a comparison web site.
Is it too late to cancel the policy. Obviously a policy can be cancelled at any time, I'm talking about withouy penalty.
Does the increase in premium from last year represent a "new contract" which would be covered by the 14 day "cooling off" period.
Or should she cancel anyway, take the financial hit from the cancellation penalty, and move to a different provider.

Thanks....I don't have the paperwork, I've suggested she calls them.
Sometimes a poster might ask a question seeking advice in the hope of gleaning any information that someone has amassed through their previous experiences or knowledge. Or use the forum as a short cut to the information they need, or perhaps, as in my case, they don't have the documentation to hand, and I'm using the forum as a short cut.

Of course "read the policy" "check the paperwork" etc are valaid responses but sometimes just stating the obvious isn't necessary, but thanks for your contributions

Yes 14 day cooling off period applies to every new and renewal contract unless you opt out.
Thanks PompeyPaul.( I'm sure that information is in the paperwork, buried in the small print somewhere) but to have you post that is very useful.Of course "read the policy" "check the paperwork" etc are valaid responses but sometimes just stating the obvious isn't necessary, but thanks for your contributions

I told my insurance company a few years back that I wouldn't be renewing and took out a policy with another company....
Annoyingly they still auto renewed
What they required was proof that a new policy had been started before they would refund the premium
For me that was easy...
Had she started a new policy with a different company or is the vehicle "uninsured"?

I now have a bit more information, Christine hasn't phoned ins. co. yet so this is all conjecture anyway
She was paying by DD monthly (I have no idea, best not to ask
)
The "first" (remember this is an automatic renewal, previous payments have been taken for last year's policy) payment was collected on the 15th Feb so she is covered at present.
Given that she had 14 days to "cool off" from the 15th, she will still be covered until the policy is cancelled or loses the "cool off" on the 28th/29th (however it's worked out.)
She will cancel today & take out a different policy with another provider. She then of course will have to fight for a refund of the monthly payment already made....hhmmm
