We`ve got a sensibly priced 964 RS that would do the job. The benefit of an RS is that it is a totally known quantity and thus fairly easy to get out of at the other end. Also the car will (or should be) road registered and road legal which is a big bonus on trackday cars come re-sale

Be careful if you go down the "hybrid" route with track cars as upkeep can sometimes be hard, the guy who built the car knows exactly what`s what but other people may struggle to spot the shock top mounts are off a `77 Oldsmobile !

The only snag is that I think you`ll struggle to get an RS for your £20k budget, but then life is never that simple !

I have a mint 968 Club Sport at www.911sport.co.uk

I would usually say it's too good for track use (just had full bare metal paint job), however it's obviously relative to wealth.

968 Sport/ClubSport would be ideal - a fantastic track car fo well under £20k. Leaves a fair amount for a spare set of wheels, cage, maintenance etc...

All you need to do is find a minter. Do the geography!!

If its solely for track days does it have to be pork? Caterham, Elise, VX220, Aerial Atom, Radical etc etc...not that theres anything wrong with a 964RS, just a thought if you are buying a track toy only.

Any 964RS worth having will cost more than £20k, so if your budget is limited what about a 968CS with a 360bhp supercharged engine?

There is always the option of an older sorted ex-race car, although you probably would not want to drive a full race car on the road for a long distance. Also keep in mind that most race cars are sold because they need a complete overhaul. A 2.7RS replica with a 3.2 or 3.6 engine would be an ideal choice of lightweight and fast early 911 that is inexpensive to maintain.

Forget the 964RS one of the best track cars is the 944 Turbo. You can pick them up cheap the parts are cheap and it handles like dream round the track, dont forget that in its day it used to out smart many a 911.
If you do go down this road one word of warning, if you buy a turbo always use a rolling start and not a stop go start they dont like it they snap in half?

I was in exactly the same position and bought a 944 turbo.

I still need to scratch the itch and get a 911, but until that time a 944 turbo will fo fine.

There are good ones about, unfortunately most people want the cheapest car they can find..........and that is not the best way to buy a car, let alone a Porsche.

A good 944 turbo can be had for 10k.......for a little more I would consider selling mine.

Sorry Mel, will return to my hole and ritually beat myself some more

It was just a suggestion....if it was me it would be pork, but thought I'd try to play devils advocate (again!)

If it has to be a 911 how about the LHD 3.2 for £11,995? I had a look at this while looking at an RS, and it unreal how clean it is - a true immaculate car.
