Went for the regular drudge around Sainsbury's last night, and wandered down the sugar isle to get some.... well, sugar! Instead of being presented with the usual Tate&Lyle granulated, last night I was given the additional choice of "Lite Cane" (or something like that) with "33% less calories" emblazoned across the packet.

Intruiged at how you could manage to extract 33% of the calories from sugar, I picked up the packet, and despite being exactly the same size packet as the regular sugar, it felt a little lightweight. So I picked up the regular sugar next to it, and sure enough it was heavier. In fact it was considerably heavier - 1kg for the regular packet vs 600g for the "lite" packet, despite both being the same physical size.

So, not so much 33% less calories as 33% less sugar then!?

It's like the low sodium salt.

How is that possible? Surely it's not salt if there is less than the usual amount of sodium.

the way they do this is:

NaCl is salt and the manufacturers of lo salt use 66%KCl and 33%NaCl so it tastes similar with less salt per unit measure

Bet the Euros will get onto them and say you can't call it salt.

They sieve the cane weevils out of the Lite product which makes it lighter.

A Cane Weevil, yesterday.

Potassium chloride is still a salt

But basically they bung some of that in

The fact that potasium may be just as bad for you as sodium isn't really the point apparently

What annoys me the most is that they call this white sugar cr@p, "Natural Cane Sugar". It's anything but that!

They bleach the stuff, add chemical and refine it so much that there is absolutely no goodness left in the final product!

Natural sugar is known as Panela and does not look white. It also has loads of vitamins and actually prevent tooth decay. On another note, it contains far more energy than the white stuff we see all the time and does give that horrible bitter taste to your mouth after having a coffee or tea.

I learnt all this stuff as my mother has a sugar cane farm in Colombia and my dad has been trying to sell panela in the UK for years now but the UK restrictions on safety and hygiene are ridiculous!

it can be good if you have high blood pressure as it is anti-hypertensive but it's not so good if you have low blood pressure but yes you are upping your potassium intake and if your one of the people that likes a lot of salt you could end up with low blood pressure
