My sister lives in the US and recently took her special edition MINI Cooper in for some service work. When she got the call to pick it up, the person who sold it to her originally asked her if she'd be interested in doing a 'buy bid' as they have someone who saw it and would be interested in buying it (hers is a rare limited edition).

I've not heard the term before but I guess the dealer is simply looking to act as a broker for a cut? They've suggested they might be able to get her into a new one as part of the deal. She doesn't want to increase her payments or extend the remaining term on her finance but it sounds like she may be in a position to negotiate a good deal perhaps, and I'm guessing the dealer's spotted a way to shift a new car and new finance (possibly to both the interested buyer and my sister)?

She'll own the car outright at the end of the finance agreement.

As I've not heard the term before, I thought I'd ask here before advising my sis!

Two second google suggests it's a way to buy yourself out of a lease, keeping the car, if there's more equity in the car than the early-termination of the lease.

So a lease says "Give us $10k, terminate the lease, keep the car" - but the car's worth $15k.
