I need a V8S to go with the cerbie ......
Discussion
Really love the look and sound of the V8S and Mr BC and I think the time has come to make an addition to the TVR collection.
Never driven one, never been in one, know nothing about them. Spotted two in the classifieds that I really like the look of (ok, I'm a bird .... i like the colour ok?!).
Have done a bit of a search and will continue reading, but does anyone have any advice as to what a complete S-virgin should be looking for ?
Cheers.

UKbob, if you're reading, got any pictures of the interior ? And from the side so I can see your wheels ?

Plug aside, go for as Pies would say:
conditon, condition, condition. Miles are pretty insignfigant. A well driven car, has had the niggles ironed out (hopefully).
Can't say for the V8S specifically, but the S's in general:
Chassis condition, especially outriggers and trailing arms. Lots of rust is bad.
Check the condition of the rear screen, and more importantly stitching. You may have the top off most of the time and not need to see out of the screen
, but you still need the stitching to keep you dry in the rain. Car valeting companies tend to use harsh abbrasives on the roof and that can damage the stitching.
Windscreen, check to see it's delaminating too much. A little cloudyness is ok, but large areas could mean a replcement very soon.
Play in the steering, wiggle the wheel up and down, if you get a knocking sound it's a sign of a steering bearing going or gone. Excess play in the action could mean rack
or ball joints.
This is all I can think of at the moment, aside from the usual bits, such as interior, paint etc.
I'm sure some of the V8 guys will post more.

That's Bob's...

Rob Ingleby is within spitting distance of you, see if he has viewed any recently he'd recommend if you are not sure what to look for.
Also have a look a 'pies' S series site for tips, not sure of the URL but someone will point it out soon I'm sure.
Another 'also' have a chat with Emma, not sure if she posts as 'flygirl' or not but you can get hold of her via Kevin Seckers profile. She has a wonderous V8S that has just had an extremely rude 4.6 put in it which to honest would probably embarass a lot of cerbs out there
.
Don't personally know any of the V8S's for sale at present so can't comment on them.
Only issue's you may have and it does vary a lot from car to car is the weight of the non-assisted steering and the amount of leg room which was dependant on the size of peddle box specified by the first owner.
Try as many as yopu can and don't forget chassis condition is No1.

I can't resist. I was planning to knock up the ad and photos at the weekend. Just need to decide on the price! HarryW will vouch that it sounds alright. Apologies for posting up what looks suspiciously like an ad in the forum, but ...
64k miles Dec 92 (last of the non-cats)& full history
Two owners (me since 97 and a Mr Secker previously!)
Black & magnolia full hide, wilton & perfect dash
Fairly standard engine (215 bhp)
Mark Adams chip and annual rolling road sessions
Nitrons (fitted & corner weighted by Richard Moore)
Tower View front disk conversion
RollCentre roll bar & Willan 3” harnesses
Full 12,000 miles service yesterday!
Oh yes, heated seats and remote boot release (perfect for Tesco’s)!
I’ve sprinted the car over the last couple of years (full page spread in Sprint a couple of issues ago), but don’t let that put you off. We’re only on track for 10 minutes during the course of a day - just a gentle drive in the park really.
It's got to go as I've finally decided I really "need" a sorted Griff 500!
Cheers

Adrian are sure that a griff 500 is much of a step up
. You've already got the handling & safety bits and if you go down the Kevin and Emma's route, V8D balanced strengthened 4.6, full gas flowed, black plenum bits etc coupled with a fully mapped fuel/ignition ECU replacement
. They are making the sort of power most tweeked 500's wished for
.
Just think all in the lovely V8S body and pre-cat noise to boot
.

Where abouts in North London are you Adrian ?

I'm based in sunny Harrow - although I'm sure it'll be tipping down when the shammy comes out at the weekend.

I cannot fault your logic; in fact there's no justification for selling whatsoever. Unfortunately I don't have the budget to do my own engine mods, although rather magnaminously I'll let the previous owner absorb some depreciation on all those 300 bhp knobs & whistles.
That aside, I also started to feel that it was rather sad for a "car enthusiast" to stick with the same car for so long. Change as good as a spice of life and all that.
Cheers
Adrian

Yes, I met Rob last year. I may give him a call when I've done a bit of research so I'm sure I know what I'm looking for !

Thanks for that Harry, I remember reading somewhere about the leg room thing - is that all just down to the first owner's spec on each car or was it something that changed over time, ie. newer models being slightly different. And what exactly is the issue ? Are some of them very tight on leg room ? I can't see that being a problem for me as I'm only 5'4, but Chris is quite tall and he'd want to be driving it to.
Also, did the shape of the S change over the years it was built? I can't quite put my finger on it but the front end of some seem different. I'm not sure whether its just a colour thing or whether there are some subtle changes.

Ok, my parents are in Barnet so I'm down that way quite frequently. Let me know when you stick it in the classifieds ...
V8S has a different bonnet to the others. S1, 2 and 3 generally have the offset, forward facing power bulge. Where as the v8S has the rear facing, humped bonnet. The lines around the front are also more curvier and less defined. S4C and some S3C have the Chim style vents down the side ala Podie's ex S3C.

Thanks both of you !
So you are actually going for it Mrs BC I remember meeting you at the PH Rolling road day and you having a good look around my car saying you fancy getting a V8S, hope my car helped you make the decision!!??
Good luck in the hunt for a car, I have never seen UKBobs motor but its a very good car I am told and he has spent a lot on improvements recently so should be a bargain!
Hope to see you at the National S meet when you finally get your P&J!

Thanks Mike.
Yes, its probably true, I was so impressed by what you'd done with your car (its immaculate) plus the sound of it. Truly stunning. I think that was probably the moment when it all started for me !!
That plus I want to be able to say that I've been to S Club Heaven !!
Hopefully see you around.
