Disabled parking spots
Discussion
I have just bought my first car in UK last week and so I started driving around London (usually during weekends). Anyway, I went to some supermarkets and IKEA and I have noticed there are a lot of disabled parking spots and they are always occupied. I looked just out of curiosity and none of the cars parked in these spots had any handicapped permit anywhere. Furthermore, I saw two ladies (not disabled) parked in a disabled space just loading their car with these massive boxes and then leave. I was driving around to find a space but didn't parked there because it was marked as disabled. I found another space just a few meters further but when I got out of my car I saw a car was parking in the disabled parking spot and the guy who got out of the car was in no way handicapped nor was any disabled person with him.
Now I am confused...what exactly is the law for this case? Is there some warden walking around these parking facilities and checking the cars parked in these spaces are actually used by disabled persons? It seemed to me that nobody cares about the disabled parking signs and park there anyway.

I'll put on my flame suit ready.. But I never understood the need for disabled parking spaces in the likes of Ikea and large supermarkets. They'll more than likely be walking miles around the shop as it is, an extra few metres from the middle of the car park to the door isn't going to hurt. I know the larger spaces are required for the likes of access but do all of these need to be right next to the door?
My car had just came out of the body shop the other day and at a busy supermarket I was left between the choice of a tight space between 2 heaps or one of about 8 free disabled spaces.
A part of me thought what are the chances of 8 disabled people arriving and me causing them inconvenience? The other part of me thought I am not a
so I parked between the 2 heaps. Neither doors had been dinged when I came out, karma!

As you are already sited up I'll let others ignite the flame throwers. But it's a good point. If special wide bays were further away from the stores would they be so popular? The joke Blue badge system in the UK, seems to be massively abused and easy to obtain.
In my old job, my work compound was next to a public car park. There was one guy ,who i know had a blue badge in his name and would play golf 3/4 times a week. He walked fine and in no way had any problem, warranting a disabled badge.
Myself and my colleauges noticed a number of people who would park for free quite often with a free car as well and certainly didnt have any problems walking.
Of course, sometimes you would see the genuinely disabled with these badges and its just a shame you have so many people abusing the system, taking up spaces of the genuine users. They must put on an oscar performance at the doctors!

Some people will need a wheelchair to get around the shop, but can perhaps make it a short distance on crutches or with a zimmer.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
