Rock Shox Fork Range Question (Upgrade to Revelations?)

Hi, have new bike coming in the Spring, comes with Rock Shox Sektor Silver TK Solo Airs or some such. Now, my last bike somewhat disappointingly only came with XC32 coil forks which are pretty bobbins, so these Solo Airs are certainly an improvement on what I have now.

However, I have the chance to stick some Rock Shox Revelations on for not much extra money. Haven't been able to try any bikes with them (although am riding an Orange Crush at the Leisure Lakes demo day in a few weeks which has them) but I am right in thinking that these are higher up the range than these (OEM it seems) Sektor Silver Whatevers?

So, MTB consensus, worth doing when the bike is brand new so I can claw some of the cost back by ebaying the Sektors?

yes the revelation is higher up the range than the sektor, how much would the upgrade cost you?

also unless the front hub your bike comes with is convertable (It probably isn't) then you will need a new front hub/wheel

Kona Precept DL. Had looked at the Crush but its got to be full suss next and this one felt good on a test ride. Wanted a Canyon but I just can't get on with not trying one first/not supporting a real shop.

£200, although this turns out doesn't include selling the Sektors, the shop will keep them. Still, sounds like a good deal even without ebaying the old ones.

There are new wheels going on it anyway (Hopes with stans rims), but both the sektors and the revelation are QR15 so surely a straight swap.

yeah that sounds like a fairly good deal; they are effectively giving you £200 ish trade in for the sektors

good choice, hope hubs are brilliant things. and yes you're right it is a straight swap, I made the rookie mistake of not properly reading the question. 3/10 for reading comprehension for me

Cool, I'm going to try some FS bikes too, I think a hardtail will still be best for me though.

With those upgrades, too it sounds like it'll be a great bike.

What is the difference in the forks? I get that one is higher up the range but what exactly is the difference?

I've got a recon gold solo air. It's really fabulous in operation but I can't really tell the diff between that and my brothers expensive Fox fork.

I run some 150mm sektors from a few years back. Not the last word in weight or fine control, but plush, take the big hits and apparently bomb proof.

depends on the exact model of revelation but basically weight and a more sophisticated damping and lockout system. also the revelations can be had in snazzy all black

Thanks. Do you mean black upper legs? I don't know the proper terminology but I've a cheaper RockShox with black upper legs which have corroded. Looks like they were powder coated as opposed to some hard surface treatment/finish like anodizing on the uppers of my "best" bike.

Yes I thought so, although it turns out they aren't 140mm travel they are either 130 or 150.

Just been trying to get my head around the various different options in the Revelation, seems as though you can get a 140mm travel version, as evidenced by here; http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/rock-shox-revel...

Rear shock on the Precept DL is 130mm, not sure about mucking with the pairings by fitting a fork that is either less travel or more travel than the one it comes with.

Hope so. It was intended to be a budget entry into FS, but I've ended up changing bits here and bits there so there isn't much left thats original. Silly really but I couldn't find anything else under 2k that I liked. Really wanted a Canyon but not fully prepared to buy a bike without some sort of trial first, even just for fit purposes. Wanted an Orange Five also, but just haven't got the budget at the moment.

Also said I wouldn't have another Kona, but this one rode nicely.
