Independent vehicle inspection by RAC, AA etc.
Discussion
Has anyone used this service, is it worth it?
There seems to be a few main players like RAC, AA and my car inspections.co.uk that offer to look at the car and depending how much you pay even take it for a test drive.
Seems to be a rather full inspection and on paper, at least, seems a good idea. I quite fancy a car that is over 100 miles from me, so quite hard to go and look for myself, I have to admit that I wouldn't really know what I was looking for anyway. Car is only £2500 and the inspection is £200.
Worth it or not?

If it is a death trap - You chances of survival in a crash are much reduced.
If it needs a few things - You can negotiate on selling price.
If it needs a lot of expensive things - You can walk away knowing it only cost you £200.
If it is perfect - You have piece of mind.

I guess it depends on where you're buying it from and if you have service history and old MOT stuff along with other paperwork. My £2,999 Cupra had a couple of issues after I bought it but nothing major (broken front spring and needed rear pads) so I wouldn't have thought the £200 worth it. Buy well, don't buy the first one you look at, check owners clubs (or PH) for buyers guides or common issues and you'll be OK.
These inspections are likely to list everything under the sun (and consequently putting the fear of God into you that it's a nail) for fear of something missed coming back to bite them.

These are ok if you have no idea whatsoever about cars and you are buying something average.
Not worth doing on old cheap stuff as you will end up with a long list of faults listed (which will be found on any old banger) but the way they give you the report you will thing the car is not worth buying.
You'd be better spending the money on a locally booked MOT ( £45) and doing an HPI check and take a few minutes to also do a Vosa mot history check and read through the service history carefully and reference against the mot mileages.
I've had several AA and or RAC checks done on cars we were selling and they really are not very good at it certainly not worth £200 as all they are doing is following a basic checklist, and for specialist stuff they tend not to have a clue what to look out for.
