Not being big or clever here but I have spent over 9 grand in the last 7 weeks fixing my Tuscan.

I thought the day would never come that I was finally falling out of love with my baby!!!

Feels great to drive now but I get in to the car thinking 'what is the next bill?'

Might be cheaper to chop it in for a newer model (Mk2) and run one under warranty although I don't like the Mk2 much and don't fit in a 350 or Sagaris...

Why oh why can't they be built just slighter better?

Blimey! And here's me arguing with Lotus that they should have to pay the £450 to replace the steering rack that is causing a really annoying squeak. This being the only bill outside of routine servicing I've had.

What on earth has gone wrong?

Well,

first was a 2004 RR rebuild to fix the normal problems plus little ends and a couple of other bits. that was 6k and then I took for a service after the 1000 mile run in and it had a list of little things to fix. But, also had to replace all the discs and pads as well as the entire suspension.

All in all, 9k in 7 weeks....

- £3K for that lot? Who did the service (if you can say)?

Obviously, can't say but it would have been much more from a main dealer.

Fixing all the bits and the service was 20 hours labour alone plus the parts.

Sorry to hear that How come you had to pay for the rebuild yourself? It is an inherant design fault:

"Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) if a fault was discovered within 5 years of supply and it is reasonable that the goods last that long then you would be covered under the act."

No way should you pick up the bill.

There is an alternative, and the engine is in the right place too Granted it is uglier than the tuscan, and doesn't have a boot but you can buy a sensible car with the 9k you save

Totally agree. I would be considering involving a lawyer on this one. 9k is far too much and these engines are not reliable - FULL STOP.

You have my sympathies.

I'm amazed that a rebuild + little bits & pieces came to £6k. But if the failure caused crap to be thrown throughout the block, needing a full bottom-end rebuild, then I can see the labour racking up considerably. I'd get in touch with legal bods, though, there's enough hard evidence of this being an inherent fault to have them over a barrel. The fact that they used to (until the summer) do goodwill rebuilds can only work in your favour, too.

It's not a case of falling out of love with the car. My Wife would fall out of love with me if I spent that much on mine.

It's worth taking TVR to task about the engine costs, these can be significantly reduced.

Has anyone been successful in the last 6 months (since the end of the goodwill rebuilds) in getting TVR to 'chip in' to the cost???

Can't believe that I am actually going to test drive a Maserati tomorrow!! It must be serious..

Don't do it! I know of a fair few people that've made that move only to be stung by monumental issues (and associated costs) on the 3200GT! Frying pan -> fire.

Know it's hard to do, but now you've got a car that works you might as well make the most of it... no point having somebody else have all the fun at your expense.

Or get a Masser under warranty and put cash aside to renew it each year (it's not cheap). Surely that'll give some piece of mind?

I'd have the same amount of faith in a Maser warranty as a Tiv one! Or any other, for that matter.

Really? Go and browse the M5 forum, or the Maser one for that matter. The difference is astounding.

M5 clutch broken about 20k miles? No problem - he's a replacement gratis.

TVR clutch broke after 20k miles - sorry sir, you should be replaced it at your last rebuild

Ah, hang on... are we talking about the all singing, all dancing, couple of grand a year main dealer warranty? In that case, yeah, I'd trust it a bit more! Thought you meant the run-of-the-mill 3rd party jobbies.
