PS3 LAN Issues COD Black Ops 2

Any PS3 gurus can help here.
Im out in Afghanistan with not so good internet. My friend and i have PS3 each with COD Black Ops 2 disc each. We also have a router and network cables to join the 2 PS3's together. We have done that bit and seems fine using both wireless and cable. When we start COD and got to LAN Party game, we cannot "each other" to play against each other. Do we have to be "signed in" to do this?

Have you tried connecting the two consoles directly without the router? Having looked on Google there are people suggesting connecting to each other directly and not through a router or switch.

We can try it but i also read it wasnt possible. As its 3 in the morning here ill try it in the morning, thanks for advice.
