The brother in law has got to have some paintwork done on his car and this stuff was supposedly applied in april 2014 when he bought the car, it cost him £180!
Just looking for some info on what it actually is so that after the bodywork is done some more protection can be applied.
Is it just a big con and basically their extra gloss protection applied over their polish?
According to the warranty information it just mentions re applying their products which they have supplied in a kit.
Any info would be great.

Its not a bad product by any means however it certainly doesn't last for life.

Autoglym Lifeshine is for most car enthusiasts just a big dealer money opportunity....the kit costs about £25 plus labour & is mostly profit therefore. On top end cars they will try & charge £600-800! I had one friend have it put for free on his Audi (well he paid at least £50k for the car, so maybe not free then!) - he gave me the kit they gave him & it still sits in tact in the cupboard. I'm not convinced by the kit & the problem isn't in the kit necessarily, but in who applies it as many dealers don't have trained detailers applying it & hence whatever they've done before they apply it just gets coated.

Exactly its all in the preparation and the application of the products. What comes in the total kit to the dealer is very good stuff, its just they get a very small amount of it (i.e for 1 car) hence the cost to them is not huge, however what the dealer gets is not just the after care kit that can be bought for 25-35quid the customer doesn't see the rest as it gets used on the car.

Thanks for the input, i will just re apply the polish and protection a few weeks after the work.
Seems too good to be true that this stuff is supposed to last years!

It can last years if you stick to the routine of regular top-ups. As has been previously stated, the products themselves are not bad but the longevity depends on the original preparation of the vehicle. Given that dealership valeters have very strict time limits on car preparation, you may find that a Professional Valeter or Detailer may be able to do a better job at a more competitive price as they will have more time to spend on thorough preparation before the application of any sealant product.
