Are the GT3/4 there to sell other Porsches?

I have stated many times on here that I think Porsche are expert at brand building and creating pure desire in buyers. I am sure I am not alone in thinking that the key function of the 'special' cars is to heighten the brand image and thus sell the more profitable cars like the Macan, Cayenne and 911 Carreras.
But, I wonder if the intention is something even more direct and simple.
I believe that the phones are virtually ringing off the hook at the OPC's for the GT3RS and GT4. And of course, its too late, there are no cars left.
So, my question is, how many of these potential customers, then buy something else instead, or transfer their deposits to a GTS or similar? Remember that there is more profit in the mass produced stuff. Price the GT cars competitively with the intention of hooking more punters and then get him/her into a more profitable car.
The GT3RS is the draw, but the punter buys a Targa GTS? Cynical?

Oh no a Porsche are trying to make a profit by selling car to us. This is outrageous. how dare they relieve us hard working plebs of our much needed cash. They should be giving the cars away.
So you get drawn into an OPC to buy a GT but discover there are none to be had. At this point you are quite with in your rights to walk away. The tempting teaser does not force you to buy something else.

I don't think GT prospects will be 'upsold' other cars unless possibly a Turbo(S) and thats simply because of speed.
The people that go to the dealership intending to buy a GT car generally will know what they are looking for - they are either car nerds/nuts or investment buyer or people that just have to have the top one in the range, even if it'll never see a track or be driven properly or will sit in the garage and be polished endlessly.
Someone goes in looking for a GT3/4 and then ends up with a Targa? Unlikely I think.
But the GT car do exist purely as Halo cars. So they are there for the racing heritage and motorsport credibility of the brand - providing a link between the race track escapades and the road cars. The intention is genuine, even though more and more tenuous these days as the road going GT cars are not currently the homologation specials they used to be.
Tech in the GT cars is used throughout the rest of the range and so Porsche can say that every model has a connection to the track, by way of the GT cars.
Makes people feel like racing drivers - massages ego - that equals dollar spent - completely irrationally.

My take on it (and its not based on anything solid, its pure conjecture and speculatuon) is that Porsche are doing what Ferrari have been doing for years. They understand that their brand and history is VERY valuable and in order to capitalise on that they need to make their 'halo' cars almost unattainable.But, I wonder if the intention is something even more direct and simple.

Just like the Enzo and F40 and LaFerrari sell ferrari branded laptops, pencil cases and keyrings, the GT3 RS and GT4 sell Boxsters, base 911's and s
t from the Porsche Design catalogue. All I can say is there must be a really good reason for them doing this as they don't half p*ss off a lot of people off in the process - what that reason is ; I have no idea - a mixture of everything said below I guess . All I know is , if anyone doesn't want thier RS slot , then please let me know I'll gladly buy it off you for a pint and a packet of fruit gums (hell , maybe even 2 packets?) cheers R
