Refit Engine Advice
Discussion
Any pointers in the best sequence to putting the engine back in my 350,
Can the engine be refitted with the manifolds already attached? or is there insufficient room?
If so whats the best way of doing up the rear manfold bolt with engine in situ?
Sounds stupid but the engine has been out since last march, and the mechanic who took it out cant remember the sequence he took it out in !! And since i've finally got some of his time this saturday I don't want waste it cocking about.
Its been a case of one thing led to another, I only took it in for a cam change! But upon investigation ........ you know how it goes!!!!!!!
The sound of the throbbing V8 is but a distant memory, but onward and upward not long now ???!!!!!

I've only done 400se's - so if you have tubular mainfolds it should be the same.
Manifolds off when installing the engine.
If you are trying to attach the engine to the gearbox that's already in the car - it's a toght jobs anyway - you need as much movement as you can get.
Time to drop in the engine & connect everything is about 6 hrs .. there will be blood, sweat & beers after.
Sorry but it's the law

I actually found it relatively easy to fit the engine and gearbox in one with the manifolds on, but mine's an early one with cast iron landrover type manifolds, so go with the Rev's advice if you have tubular manifolds. You can jack the engine up a bit before you bolt up the engine mountws in order to find a way through to tighten the rear manifold bolts.
Good luck, and don't forget the supply of surgical gloves

Oh well, guess i'll take the gearbox out as well and put it in as whole unit !
Can this be done with manifolds attached ????
Or is it a case of engine and gearbox then attach manifolds.
Just tell me straight if I should stop dreaming that the manifolds can be left on when sliding the engine back in !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think wedge withdrawal symptoms are taking effect

If you are going to put the box & engine in in one go :
You will need a hydraulic wince with lots of lift
(it can help to drop the car down too) if you have lift height problems..
I'm 99% sure that you cannot leave the tubular manifolds on during this process. Sorry.
You can always tap & die the exhaust bolts and holes before attempting to put the engine & box in & lube (coopper ease) the bolts.. (new bolts !).
It will make the job easier

Hi...
Been involved with two S2 350's in the last 12 months.
Mine went back in with gearbox, both manifolds etc installed... Only left starter off! Slid in nice and easy... BUT... it needs a good strong, long hoist.
Mates went in in similar but, we had to remove one of the manifolds so it would go back in.
I managed it on my own, but it's much safer and easier if you have assistance.
Regards,
Brian (and a Red 350i)
