Apple closing down Aperture
Discussion
I got an email last hit from Apple explaining that you won't be able to get Aperture in the App Store any more, and that they are trying to migrate everyone to the photos app thing which seems a bit 'lite' for proper photo work.
It's fine for now as the program still works but I susoect this means that they will slowly phase out support on an OS upgrade at some point so my mind is beginning to turn to what to ultimately replace it with.
It's Lightroom, I suppose, as that seems to be standard. I've never used it myself but I assume it's much of a much?
That aside, how complex is adobe's CC pricing?? I'm utterly bewildered as to what I want/need.
I don't do a lot of photoshopping though I guess it would be nice to have (but it's another thing to learn) so is it better to just buy Lightroom (you can do that right?) or sign up to the creative cloud stuff?
CC seems expensive who you start adding it up over the years so I'm not sure if it's worth it.
Interested to hear what folk on hear use and how they bought it...

Been using Lightroom since before it was Lightroom (anyone remember Raw Shooter?)
I have to say that it's familiarity that's kept me with it. In 2011 I trialled Aperture and Capture One for a while. I quite liked Aperture, and it was at an excellent price point. But still, the costs of updating Lightroom to new versions every so often seemed reasonable... Until you add all that up and add Photoshop Elements or whatever (plus I use Photomatix and paid a one-off for that some years ago)
So this year I've jumped into Creative Cloud for LR and PS and intend to be using it across several devices - and even dabbling with LR Mobile. Plus will start to use Cloud for storage (when I get round to properly understanding it!)
The attraction, although perhaps the only upside, is knowing you've always got latest software at your fingertips.
I've gone the same way with Microsoft Office (now a firm Mac-believer, but Mrs Beano can't cope without a MS fix!) and it feels a bit odd paying for these things monthly, like your water bill, but that's the way I'm starting to look at it all.
If, say, you were budgeting a ton each year for LR updates anyway, getting access to PS (full fat) without shelling out another monkey seems suddenly like a good deal...

I guess I'm budgeting the "Big" upgrades 4 to 5 etc. and actually they don't come along every year (just seems like it - like most things in the modern world!).
If you get on with Aperture, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't get on with Lightroom - I know someone will be along in a minute to say it's a nightmare with reds or purples or noise is a problem. But that's all relative. Plus there's a ton of online resource to help you get what you want - and loads of presets if that's your bag [shudder] - it's not mine!

Good knowledge, thanks.
That's interesting to hear that LR costs about a ton in upgrades annually, irrespective of CC. Aperture has been a one-off cost with all updates free and I had been assuming that buying LR was buying it properly, if you see what I mean.
Hmm.
If you have CC then upgrades are included as part if that. The downside is that you have to keep paying month in month out to use them, and if you don't upgrade everythpime a new release comes out then you can manage easily in standalone purchase of Lightoom. 6 is due out very soon according to rumor. That's interesting to hear that LR costs about a ton in upgrades annually, irrespective of CC. Apart from that you can try Capture One, personally I found it superior to LR, or Affinity which is Mac only and in Beta at the moments will go on sale for around £39.99 or so.
Plenty to pick from, try them all and see what's best for you.
I got the email too. Just as I was starting to get the hang of Aperture!
Not going to change my camera for a while so can probably continue to use Aperture for some time to come. Probably the next couple of years perhaps. If I do buy a new camera it will probably be either a Fuji X100T/X-E2/X-Pro1 or a Sony A7 which are all supported. Am I correct in saying that the only problem with Aperture will be that RAW files for new cameras will not be supported?
When it is released will Photos be a free app? I can't see anything anywhere about pricing.

Rumor on the Macrumours forum is that Photos will be free and part of the next OSX upgrade. Not going to change my camera for a while so can probably continue to use Aperture for some time to come. I'm in the same situation – I've used Aperture for 5 years or so as my primary organisation/editing tool.
Since the news last year that they wouldn't be updating it, I've tried Lightroom and Capture One.
It's been eye-opening to say the least – Capture One feels far more powerful than Aperture (using several mask layers to adjust selected bits – how have I coped without that?), and adjustments to highlights and shadows look way more natural than Aperture. I haven't really looked at Capture One's organisational ability yet – the interface feels a little clunky on that side of things.
I need to spend more time with the Lightroom trial to see how that does on the organisational front too – after years of simply creating Aperture projects for each shoot and grouping them by year, I'm a bit scared of the change. Plus I have 500gb and 10 years of photos to move across to whichever I choose. Argh!

Just yesterday I made the switch from Windows to a Mac Book Pro.
Have just read through this thread, rather lost in what editing program to use! What do people suggest? Aperture seems a very good program from what I have seen on the store, though if it is not being supported what shall i use?!
Many thanks in advance.

Funnily enough, I've just this minute started to download Lightroom to make the switch from Aperture. I've decided to draw a (virtual) line in the sand and have exported all of my edited photos as JPEG files from Aperture for viewing as and when. I very rarely, if at all, revisit images for further editing once I've been through them the first time. Will just use LR from now on. If I do need to look at the odd one again, I've kept my old Aperture structure (I used referenced files) on a spare drive so can get at them if necessary. If that happens way after MacOS has moved on so much that Aperture doesn't work, I'll just re-do them in LR (or whatever!)
Also, you don't have to do Creative Cloud subscriptions to get Lightroom. It costs about £80 for a one-off, standalone licence.

I'm quite surprised they've only just started informing people as this has been in the tech news a month if not longer. They will stop selling aperture but I believe still offer some support but eventually they want everyone on to photos. However a new version of photos is being developed at the moment so hopefully there will be a lot of carry over.
Not a big fan of lightroom as a raw converter. It auto adjusts your highlights in its default format. If I am shooting RAW I want total control, not some arbitrary auto setting that it applies. Putting it back to 2010 version helps though.
Was using the RAW converter in Photoshop CC but am just trying Capture one at present. Capture one seems slightly better in the highlights (once I have imported to PS and applied the processing) and the interface feels more professional. I am still testing it at the moment so will hold out on a final decision.
