given prices maybe Notts just does not have the client base?
nearly twenty years ago I remember spending approx. £75 each excluding drinks in London - cannot for the life of me remember the name of the place but I think we were the only 'Brits' in the place - there was no concession to Western style - it was mats on the floor

decent fish restaurant - eg one that sells Dover Sole and exotics such as Mahi Mahi/Captiaine Blanc/Capitaine Rouge/Barracuda etc etc
other favourite fish inc Barramunda (Waitrose used to sell from a UK farm that went bust)Aussies species like flathead/whiting etc
guess I'm going to be lucky outside of London?
talking of good fish Costco have some exotics that are excellent - Maine Lobster tails/Tilapia Fillets/Soft Shell crabs/New Zealand Clams

In the City centre I'd recommend World Service highly - the Wife and I are regulars there and have never had bad service or a bad meal. Iberico is very good too - it's tapas and the setting is quite unique. Harts is also very good.
I've never found Sat Bains to be pretentious - Sat himself certainly isn't and I don't think having your restaurant almost under a flyover, next to a pylon on the edge of an industrial estate is pretentious.p
ETA: For something a bit different, I'd recommend Annie's Burger Shack.

The Ginza in Sherwood is great for a group night out. Food is good and teppanyaki service is always entertaining. For a more authentic Japanese experience go to the Higoi in Lenton.Kobe beef?

For an actual Japanese experience go to Ebi Sushi in Derby which was set up largely for the Toyota execs I understand.
Excellent is a subjective term so I will not use it but I really like the Ginza; so much so I have been going for 20 years!

Sat Bains is widely considered the best restaurant in the East Midlands, but it is very 'Michelin Star' indeed, and that does not suit everyone.
If you are looking for something a little less esoteric, I would recommend Hart's in the city centre. The food is, excellent : modern British, without being too 'Michelin' and the service is very professional.
