I'm looking into purchasing my Dad a birth year watch for his 60th birthday in a few months, nothing stupidly expensive but between £500-1000 max.

So I've seen a few Omega watches on Ebay that I think my dad would like, however have any of you experienced purchasing vintage from Ebay? It appears unsurprisingly that at this age a lot of the watches will not have papers of authentication or anything, which means there is no guarantee that its going to be a 1955, but would it be easy to see fake watches at this age?

I know nothing about watches, hence asking here, but Ebay does seem to be much better value then a specialist vintage store. I'm going to try to learn more about the watches myself but any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks

if you're after an omega, go to omegaforums.net and look there - good sellers like kringkily will get you a decent deal. eBay has ok priced watches, but there is a lot of tat, and some fakes, and it's hard telling one from the other.
