I'm in the process of selling my E46 M3 for a Nissan GTR. Being extremely picky finding the right GTR is taking longer than anticipated. By chance an interested party has come forward for my daily Z4 so now I'm having to search for a replacement for that as well.

The obvious choices are an Z4M or 987 S. I'd love a 981 S and even though I could probably stretch to the purchase cost I don't fancy the depreciation that will occur. Having experienced an S54 and Z4 for 5+ years now, the Z4M is becoming second favourite to the 987.

I do like the silver/red interior and I can't seem to find a non RS60 car that is as well specced as the RS60. Also I assume the RS60 will hold it's value better than the standard cars.

The car will be my daily with about 6K per annum and I feel it'll be a good partner to the GTR.

Anything I should look for in particular when buying these cars?

Good looking car but the 3.4 engines allegedly have issues. I'd go with the Z4M.

I am somewhat aware of the issues so would be buying one with an OPC warranty. I thought 3.4 Boxster engines were more reliable than the bigger capacity versions with regards to bore scoring?

Apparently they're the worst but you should be fine with a warranty. Failure rates are lower than scaremongers make out

I've always understood it to be the larger the capacity the greater the risk.

Mike,

sounds promising but to be honest I'm more concerned with spec rather than miles as it will be a daily.

Would you happen to know what options it has and where about in the country is the owner based?

they're all virtually identical spec. Dealers try to charge more for these but they're really just a tarted up gen 1 and attaching the RS 60 moniker to them is a bit ott. I suspect that 6k mile car will be overlapping with gen 2 boosters which have the more reliable dfi engine. I love the RS 60 looks but it should not be £20k which is what I've sen the advertised for. Its a £15k car max IMI. May be the the low miles car is worth £20k but i'd go gen 2 at that money even 2.9 form.

I've got an RS60 as a second toy to keep the miles off my GT3. Had it for about 6 months now and really enjoy it. Great spec, PSE sounds awesome in sport mode although usually keep the suspension in comfort as otherwise feels like my GT3 complete with KWv3 set for fast road. It is a fantastic drive and probably quicker / safer on a poor surfaced B road, although that's true of any Boxster. Mine has red interior with a black roof which personally I prefer. Overall very pleased with it.

EDIT: Bad day.

Thats not entirely true, although I agree, failure rates are very low and its the age old scaremongering that many keyboard warriors will bang on about the minute somebody even mutters 987/997, although if it does happen it's expensive - inch wide, mile deep as they say.

The worst ones were the 3.8 according to reports from the network of Porsche Indies and there is also something very much worth a read in the last issue of GT Porsche Magazine (OP worth buying a copy and reading the piece on the M96/M97 engined cars), but there is a lot more to it than that, for instance, research suggests that you're also far more likely to suffer bore scoring if the car is tiptronic. The way its driven, looked after etc etc all contribute.

Get one with an OPC warranty and it's not something to worry about - then enjoy the car.

I've had an RS 60 now for nearly three years which is a record for me in car ownership as I get bored after a year and sell them. I like the fact you have virtually everything PASM, PSE etc which I found impossible to find in an S. I only use mine in the summer and love it. Mine had PCCB's fitted so that was a real bonus, they are lovely cars to drive and I have had zero issues with it unlike cars in my past. Once I warm it up properly I do enjoy using the performance and it still puts a big grin on your face and is capable of silly speeds (on track that is) the engine loves to rev and the PSE sounds great with the top down. I know someone on here referred to it as a parts bin special which is a bit juvenile considering all the bits that come as standard. I am in the process of buying a Gen 2 911 Turbo S soft top and had it up for sale on here for £21K in less than a day I had 10 people wanting to see it and buy it which made me think it was too cheap. There is very little on the market for the price that can make you smile as much, I've had no issues with the engine or anything to worry me during my ownership. Didn't sell it in the end but will at sometime .
