Driving along (M6 GCP), minding my own business in the slow lane of a dual carriageway (wife and kids on board so very leisurely pace), noticed a new M4 in that lovely light blue colour coming up behind at some speed in the fast lane and thought to myself, great, I’ll get a good look at the car when it goes past as a brief moment of interest on an otherwise boring drive. As the M4 came up alongside me he slowed down to match my speed for a moment, but must have dropped the gears by a couple so the engine was really screaming, then with a quick burst of speed he pulled into the slow lane in front of me. He then proceeded to slow down so that I had to drop my speed by about 10 mph. This carried on for about 2-3 minutes or so at which point I decided that I’d had enough of this so I very leisurely went to pull out into the fast lane to get my speed back up to my previous pace. Instantly he sped up and pulled out into the fast lane in front of me to stop me going past. I followed him for another half a mile or so and then dropped back into the slow lane ready to come off the dual carriage way up ahead. He, again, quickly sped up and pulled back into the slow lane in front of me, immediately slowing down again to cause me to run at a slower pace than I would have probably been doing otherwise. Fortunately I soon turned off the road and he carried on. Ive had a few similar experiences when I was driving my 599, usually with a finger or mouthed obscenity in my general direction as well but never in my BMW from a fellow BMW driver.

Ive often exchanged a nod and mutual respective glance with the driver of another M car but this was the rudest encounter I’ve ever had. In fact I think I usually moderate my driving in the presence of another M car, for fear of giving any hint that I'm looking for any form of trouble or fast paced battle.

The encounter got me thinking…what do other drivers do when they encounter another M car in front or just behind them?

I've had numerous M135i's attempt to goad me into a race, usually by sitting 2ft off my bumper.

Sounds like an utter tool. There's no barrier to entry to the club so no surprise.

Mine are too old to be noticed by most M-car drivers you would encounter

I generally tend to give a wave to anyone in a 10+ year old M-car or all 20+ year old BMWs, as my thinking is they're probably a bit of an enthusiast (no offence meant OP). They usual wave back, even if they're just thinking "Do I know them?"

Odd behaviour and best ignored.

Leins please don't perpetuate the myth that if you have a new M car you're not an enthusiast and don't recognise or take an interest in all M cars past and present, lots of us driving new ones grew up dreaming of M635csi/M1/e30/e34 etc...

Even if there's quite a bit of truth to it IME?

Worst are Audi drivers in their S line diesels who want to see how their 2.0 Tdi rep mobiles compare to any BMW model with 4 exhaust pipes.

An industrial strength c@ck. Anyone with their priorities so far out of whack doesn't deserve such a fine automobile (Ferris Bueller 1986).

This happened to me although I was in a F31 330d M Sport, but a real odd ball of an encounter.

I was on the M4 travelling into London, wife and children on board and see a blue F31 closing in on me. I’m in the inside lane at 70 mph. He overtakes me and then hovers just in front of my car but in the middle lane.

He’s driving a 320d, I’m thinking he’s having a look at my car then he accelerates away and disappears.

I carry on and see him in the middle lane with cars undertaking and over taking him, his speed is around 60 mph, I overtake, he’s having a fag with his window open.

I think no more of it. I see him closing in on me again and he tailgates close, I can’t see his number plate, the traffic enters the 60 zone outside of London, I slow to 60. Traffic is light and I assume he would overtake, he doesn’t. I slow to 50, he keeps close, I slow to 40, he stays on my tail, I’m getting a little angry as to why he’s kissing my bumper, there are few cars on the road and whatever point he’s making is just stupid, I have enough and pull off into the services and let him bother someone else.

He carries on and speeds off with a glance across, just a cock I guess, very odd.

Bizarre behaviour,

I exchange a nod and a wave to other Zed drivers but I've only had the goaded into racing once (E39 530D with an M badge in the front grill flashing me in slow moving traffic).

I just pulled in so he could then tickle the rear bumper of someone else.

Sadly I have to agree, I'll talk cars to anyone who will listen but it has also been my experience that most new M car owners are not the faintest bit interested or aware of the older stuff.

+1 (nice quote by the way)

If I'm passed by an M I'll give a wave or a nod, if I'm passing I'll tend to leave plenty of room so as not to provoke. At the end of the day I'm just trying to get somewhere and while I'll ponder aesthetics and colour choices for a second I wouldn't want to impact their journey and you never know their ability (or lack of)...

Other M drivers get a wave and a exhaust pop. No point in anything else, we all know what each others cars can do, we've all read the brochure.

I do regularly get knob heads trying to overtake or speed in front of me in some vain attempt to show how powerful they are, it's like there is some private facebook club where you can say that you overtook a M car at the traffic lights..

The worst ones at the moment are the AMG A-45's Merc's.

It sounds like the M4 was worried you were about to run out of fuel and was ready to throw you a towline to get you to the next petrol station. Sounds like a good bloke to me...

I just don't get that, you obviously haven't spoken to me! (obviously) I love M cars of all types and ages and always enjoy seeing an e34 M5 (my favourite M car in 3.8 guise)

I've had 4 over the last 10 years now and fingers crossed will be able to continue too. But I hate the thought that people have this almost reverse snobbery about a new M car and that some how they aren't part of the club. (whatever that club is)

I tend to speak as I find rather than making assumptions.

Anyway enjoy your cars.

I often slow down when there is a F30 or F10 without privacy glass to have a nose to double check it's not an unmarked police car. Once you can see it's not, on my merry way again.

When I had an M235i that sort of thing actually happened quite a lot. All sorts of people wanting to race it on the motorway. Mainly hot hatches like Golf's, Megan's etc.

Very true. It's like they have a point to prove somehow.
