I'm sure nobody wants another oil debate thread, but I have a specific question:

Is running 'race' oils (IE those without detergents and/or any vehicle approvals) a good idea in a car that will only ever be used on the road?

I will do perhaps 3000km (~1800Mi) this year, and will change the oil every 12 months. With this being the case, is there a problem in running an oil without detergents?

I was considering trying this oil (Motul 300V 5W40): https://www.motul.com/de/de/products/oils-lubrican...

IMHO this oil would work perfectly well but might not get hot enough, with road use, to efficiently remove contaminants. A conventional oil with detergents will deal with low oil temperatures better. Race oils have an advantage when operating at the limits of performance but are not really any better for normal road use. Sledgehammer to crack a nut syndrome.

Thanks DCL, sensible advice as always. I thought this might be the case, but was not aware of the possible temperature problem.

In that case, I will probably look to a fully synthetic road car oil (with vehicle approvals). Something like this (5W40 8100 X-cess): https://www.motul.com/gb/en/products/oils-lubrican...

Unless there are some other recommendations on the best quality fully synthetic oil for road use?
