Slightly off topic, but I figure some fellow runners must hang out in Pedal Powered...

I've run a few half marathons over the past couple of years, gradually building up my mileage. I'm looking to run my first Marathon in October.

When training for half marathon sort of distances, I've been using a Salomon running belt that carries 2x200ml water bottles. However this wont last me for longer runs.

My question is what do all of you triathletes and long distance runners prefer for hydration? Are small camelbak's useful for this sort of thing? If so, do you use them on race-day or only for training?

Try The Running Threadthumbup

Edit: There are plenty of small "race vest" items that people use for Ultras. Preferable to holding a bottle IMO. I use an Inov8 Race Ultra occasionally.

I'm not a fan of carrying a bottle, so I use one of the following approaches:

- Quid in back pocket, run into a shop halfway for bottle of sports drink/water, drink it slowly over a few miles, then bin bottle.

- Leave a bottle on my doorstep and plan a route that calls by the house once or twice (this one needs a bit of willpower).

I only carry a few gels for the actual race, as they may not have the type I like (and have used in training). I then just drink their water at refreshment stops.

I don't need to drink while training, guess everyone is different!
Some do a figure of 8, so get a drink at home at the half way point..

I use a camelbak arc run belt which is pretty similar to yours and has two 200ml bottles which I find is sufficient for two hours running, I believe they also have a model with four bottles.
If its particularly hot I plan a loop where I know I can refill the bottles.
I also have a pack with 2.0L bladder for mountain running.
In an organised marathon you are likely to find there are regular water stops
