All cyclists should be on drugs they might ride a lot more responsibly and not on footpaths as if they were on race tracks, they might stop riding through red lights down the middle of country roads and the wrong way down one way streets etc, etc.....................

Random drug testing was part of the first PH cycling weekend. If i recall correctly a selection of random drugs were tested and everyone agreed they were excellent.

Have to say it doesn't particularly surprise me.

I guess a lot of the 40 + yrs businessmen are ultra-high achievers, for whom this is as much (or perhaps more so)about proving they are a 'winner' in everything they do and that they have a super-large wang, as befitting their general alpha maleness - as it is any particular love of cycling. It's just the 'thing' to win at at the moment.

I haven't had chance to read the CIRC report yet but 90% of riders using performance enhancing drugs sounds like a lot. Also where are they getting the evidence from that club riders/masters racers are using drugs??

The CIRC admitted that responses varied as to exactly how widespread the problem of doping was today, but said that in a team "probably three or four were clean, three or four were doping, and the rest were a 'don't know'."

"One respected cycling professional felt that even today, 90 per cent of the peloton was doping," it added. "Another put it at around 20 per cent."

The press have unsurprisingly lept on the 90% comment however....

I think they've also taken the quote that 90% of riders don't want their blood tests re-tested at a later stage, to mean they're doping.

Looks like a very lazy/pointless bit of journalism to me.. Inclined to reckon if it was 100% legal and 20 quid / week, you'd *still* not get a 90% market penetration / uptake

Are you really that bothered if a club racer takes EPO or whatever else they can get hold of? Their body and if they want to take the risk.

You might have a different opinion if you were racing against one of these people...

It's amateur sport. I'd remember that this is a hobby and not get to hung about it. In most sports people can cheat if they really want to and in amateur sport you aren't going to have the resources to ensure its a completely level playing field.

I like taking part in my sport but I don't kid myself there aren't ways to get an advantage if you are that desperate for a tiny little cup.

It's amateur sport. I'd remember that this is a hobby and not get to hung about it. In most sports people can cheat if they really want to an in amateur sport you aren't going to have the resources to ensure its a completely level playing field.

I like taking part in my sport but I don't kid myself there aren't ways to get an advantage if you are that desperate for a tiny little cup.

I understand what you are saying but if was training hard 2 hours plus a day to be beaten by someone getting an advantage through illegal means then I would feel a bit aggrieved.

Would you put your hand in your pocket to pay for testing of competitors in a club race? I can't see it being a very cheap process to run a drugs testing system that can't be beaten by someone who really wants to win. If the professionals struggle with it I just can't see it being practical at a club level.

How many people are really willing to risk their long term health to be a club champion? I know I certainly wouldn't.

Does anyone on this forum really think its happening?

Undoubtedly it is happening, to what level I dont know but consider the following;

People will spend stloads on the latest piece of equipment taht they think will make them faster
There is little or no testing from Cat 4 to Cat 1
PEDs are easy to buy
A few good races and you are starting to get the attention of teams
Winning feels good...

Yeah, decent wheels 3k saves a few seconds and many don't think twice about that, EPO saves minutes ( add 50-100 watts for far less than said wheels ) .

I guess the people on here saying not fussed etc are at the bottom of the racing club ladder , anyone near the top would be rightfully pissed off
