A10's back on uk soil

Just seen this, obviously only rumour, but would be nice if true.



Thumbsnap not displaying on my screen, so just in case its not just me:

• ADVANCED NOTICE** This is purely just a rumour at this time so we are not confirming anything. Information from a few sources say that 4 A10's are due into Lakenheath on Friday from Spangdahlem & are planning on using both Donna Nook & Holbeach range next week. This is very exciting news but please bare with us on this one as it is not confirmed we will bring more details as and when we get them.

To be fair - if the A-10 struggles to survive, 99% of all other aircraft will have the same problem in the threat environment you're imagining - it's still the most lethal CAS platform there is today, despite what the big boys in the USAF / Government are trying to say about the shiny F-35 being able to replace it.

Troops in contact: "Request strafe of insurgent SUV heading North..."

F-35 pilot: "Um, sorry man - I can't fire my cannon until the next windows patch in 2019, but - good luck with that..."

Loiter at high level for a few hours and then barrel in when needed at 500kts.

Plus it can deliver a much wider, and harder hitting, array of ordnance than a Apache. Try strapping 4 LGBs, 2 Mavericks and 4 sidewinders to an Apache and see were you get.

very interesting given all the talk about scrapping them at the moment, to deploy them in Syria at a time when USAF want to scrap them to save funds is as politically motivated a call as you will ever see and serves to highlight the gap that scrapping them would leave.

Its true, I live 10 minutes from Donna Nook and it has been VERY busy of late, lots of Typhoons and F15's. FWIW the A10's are due to the range at some point next week, I'm off monday so hoping to get up there with the lad!

Vne (Velocity Never Exceed) on the A10 is 450Kts IIRC. They'll make about 380Kts clean at low level.

I'm not a Hog driver but I'd guess they'll be needing air-to-air refuelling to cross the pond... These ones could be coming over from Spangdahlem though?
