Interesting. That really is quite heavy given the size of the car.

Add a tank of fuel and your lardy arse then yes you have a 1500kg Cayman.

The 350Z is around 1520kg iirc.

The CS is not bad weight as you say, and that's with your zenons and Bose adding a bit over stock.

Xenons vs standard halogens can't be a significant difference. The whole light unit itself cannot be much more than 3kgs. 1350 ish seems in line with other quoted weights for 986 and 987 Boxsters.

You do have a point but I don't think that any of the cars above have an excuse for being so heavy, although aren't the Vantage and F type much bigger than a Cayman?

I just can't fathom where the weight in the Cayman comes from, especially when its got some expensive aluminium components and minimal physical size.

There are plenty of regular hatchbacks and saloon cars of the same generation as the Cayman which are lighter yet much larger and with perfectly sound monocoque constructions.

Why? Structurally it's a steel monocoque with 3 doors. The only difference of consequence is that the hatchback will almost certainly be a 4 cylinder turbo. The 981 ought to be lighter than a "similar" hatch with all its aluminium bits - but isn't.

I agree with you, Porsche have done a remarkable job compared to their competition who have all bloated. Your car is not much different to the weight of the 964 C2, 944 turbo, 968 etc. but will be several times stiffer and stronger in a crash.

1360 is almost identical to a 996.1 GT3 CS (minus the full cage) from experience..

But an S class is bigger, so you would expect that.

My observation is that there are run of the mill cars out there which are bigger than a Cayman and lighter.

For example parked next to my Cayman is a 2005 Mondeo, a 4 cylinder version admittedly but with a kerb weight of 1360kg. Only that's with a tank of fuel and a driver of 75kg, yet its positively massive compared to a Cayman (and the 6 cylinder model isn't much more than 1400kg).

Given the dimensions of the Cayman, the fact that its a sports car and the amount it costs, I don't think it would be unreasonable to have thought it to be lighter it is.

I did say that the engine WAS a difference - it's LOCATION won't make much odds weight-wise since the engine and gearbox are a unit (unlike an S class). If the turbo 4 cayman when it comes IS significantly lighter than turbo hatches (as it should by virtue of the aluminium panels), then Porsche will have done a good job. Until then the jury is out.

less than 1/4 of a tank... car is a LHD with the 90L tank option.

Don't you think the 3 extra seats, seat belts, folding mechanism, extra trim of a hatchback ought to weigh quite a lot? After all the base 911 weighs 60kg more than a Cayman S.

What's the manufacturer claimed kerb weight of the cayman s just as reference? ~1400kg fully fueled is pretty good really for a modern car these days. Not much outside of the exige v6 is going to be significantly lighter for cars with 6+ cylinder engines.

You clearly didn't read mine either - I ACCEPT the six pot argument, but you seem to think a hatchback can't be compared. It can - just move the engine 8 feet forward and you have a front wheel drive car - albeit with 6 cylinders. Which is why I said the jury is out until the turbo 4 comes out. I don't know why you can't accept that. But if you can't - fine.

Can I quote the new MK3 Audi TT weight yet ;-) that will be the 4 pot Cayman benchmark weight one hopes.

or the car I ordered last week sits at 1088KG wet and has 4 seats.

cars needs to be lighter you only have to see the la Ferrari @ 1255kg to go wow people can still make light cars with big engines.

what is annoying is Lotus who can do this sort of thing just did not try with the Evora, that's sad to see.

This is a pointless exercise.
He's obviously spent a long time checking weights of any car that fits his very specific rules, just to make sure his car is the winner.

What he should have been doing is working a bit of overtime to buy some 18inch wheels so he doesn't look like Noddy.

I think you will find fully fueled a laferrari will weigh in excess of 1500kg real world.

Couldn't agree more. As a Lotus fan I wish I could be as optimistic as koorby over the Evora 400.
