I understand the new arrangements mean that the seller must obtain a refund now so the buyer has to tax from day 1.

But how does this work in practice, particularly bearing in mind the seller only gets a refund for the following month onward and the buyer has to tax from the beginning of the month (so more tax for the government)?

If I go to see a car and agree to take it away, along with a part of the V5, leaving the bulk of it behind for the seller to send off, have I now become the registered keeper? More importantly, can I drive it home legally without dealing with the tax?

It seems unfair not to have all of the rest of the month to deal with the tax situation bearing in mind the double tax situation for that month.

The theory is that you need to tax it either online or by phone before you drive it away. The reality is that the DVLA systems won't know you've bought the car until they get the V5 back.

Nothing biggrin I'm explaining that the DVLA won't know about the transfer until they get the V5, what you take that to mean is up to you hehe

I bought a car on Friday, taxed it online before I drove off, the new buyers slip of the v5 has a reference number on it, type this in to the DVLA website, took me all of two minutes to do.

I agree. It is the Registered Keeper who is responsible for VED not the owner. You don't become the RK until the V5C is processed by the DVLA and the change of keeper is registered judge

This.

New tax laws are so punitive that I don't even own my Daily Driver, it still belongs to another member of the family until the tax runs out. My insurance company were fine with it.

Punitive? Yes an absolute killer, what with the absolute worst case scenario meaning you might have to pay an extra £42 for the first year.

£42 for what?

The whole VED system is balls. Just scrap it and put a couple of PP/L on fuel.

It is untaxed before the ink has dried in the signature box of the v5, but it's not really possible for anyone to know it is untaxed for a week or so, unless you show them your new keepers slip and tell them you have not retaxed

Why. Just transfer it over right at the end of the month.

playing a bit of cynism here...

whats to say the DVLA aren't going to start cross checking records and issuing speculative fines based on the tax not being purchased or SORN registered within 1 day of the signed date of transfer.

I don't think we are in that world but i believe they could legaly.

Now what are you going on about? Firstly you said you don't own your car and won't until the tax runs out. That suggests you're trying to ensure you don't have a month where you pay double tax. The worst case scenario for that is £42

The other idea of adding a couple of pence (plus VAT) to petrol is incredible in its naïveté. any move like that would still mean the same amount of money had to be generated so some will pay more, some less and some the same but there is no chance that everyone will pay less.

I'm due to sell my car soon to a friend, currently it's taxed & i pay via DD to the DVLA, how do i cancel it?
Just cancel the DD through my bank? As it'll be his respinsibility to tax it.

Send in the V5 saying you've sold it, just as you would've done previously.

If the car is already taxed until November, I lose alot more than £42...

Its a brilliant idea, those who use no fuel through driving no miles pay no tax...

I think the goverment should scrap the road tax and increase the price of petrol a bit.

As the name implies(a road tax) the people or company driver who do 20-30k effectively pay more than the little old lady who does less than 1k miles a year.

OK, much food for thought. Thanks all.

I am aiming to take off in the car and get my passenger to use DVLA phone line or even internet on his smart phone to purchase the tax properly. But I was concerned about not getting a signal or the phone dying, etc. Seems that there is little risk in having to wait until I get home, or even within a couple of days.
