Hi All,

I have a personal plate on a car thats in bits, It wasn't in bits last year, and had MOT, Tax and Insurance, but now had no interior, loom half removed and lots of items out of the engine bay...

Is there any way of getting my plate swapped off? I'm thinking of parting the car out rather than putting it back on the road.

Thanks,

geeks

Can you not just put the plate onto retention?

Yep, that or straight onto my runaround? Don't mind either way.

MOT not needed, assuming it's post 1960. Just to have had tax within the last twelve months, and no period when it's been untaxed without being SORNed.

Maybe, one day, the Gov't will put a website together that answers this kind of question...
https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registrati...
Blimey, that was quick.

What happens if it was more than 12 months SORN'd? Its quite a long way from being re-MOT able and I don't want a bent one as its pretty obviously got some MOT failing rot (hence coming off the road)

from the Gov UK website:

To transfer a plate or to put a plate on retention :

The vehicle must be a testable type, subject to MOT/GVT (road worthiness test).

Better get that car MOT'd

You have to tax it again before you can get the plate off. And, to tax it, you need an MOT.

Can I tax without MOT? I'm assuming no?

No you need an MOT to tax it. All online as well now.

It's not looking great i'm afraid.

Mmmm. time to get the welder out then, and the MOT rule book. Bare minimum time!

Try speaking to the DVLA (I know, I know!).

We had an issue a couple of years back where we had a car that was bought to strip and sell, with a plate that could've been used as a personalised one. Long story short we stripped the car before realising the rules on retaining a plate, and clearly the car was never going to be road legal again, however we explained the story and the DVLA were happy for us to remove the plate before scrapping the shell.

It might be more awkward now with no local centres, but worth a try at least?

Yeah, time for a phonecall, I still have a (slightly rusty) shell with the VIN, but it has a different engine in, should be amusing.

I am pretty sure that you cannot take a private plate off a car if it does not have an MOT.

About 10-15 years ago there was an old Morris 1000 advertised that was taxed and MOT with the private registration 1 AN advertised for a relatively cheap price. In the sellers details was a stipulation from the DVLA that under no circumstances would the plate be allowed to be removed from the car anytime in the future.

Why would that be the case.

<looks back two hours and several posts, to actual DVLA web link explaining what's really required>

The Minor with 1AN has a non transferable plate, It was reissued on that basis as are many that fell off the computer. Totally different scenario.

In fairness to btcc123, these rules appear to have changed on the website only 2 days ago.

I was looking at this a week or so ago as my late father's camper van has a plate on it which may be worth a little bit, but currently no MOT.
I'm certain it said then that the vehicle must have a valid MOT, and the line about pre-1960 vehicles was not present.

The cost of retention has also been significantly lowered.

Definitely needs an m.o.t to transfer a plate. Two identical cars though, one with an m.o.t and one without? Problem solved..

I'm thinking that VIN numbers not matching may throw a spanner in the works of this wizard plan Mr. Rgt?

Haha. I know 22Rgt has got a reputation on here as being a bit 'special', but Christ almighty.........

I love it when people post links to the actual relevant documentation and then other people still comment on the thread and say the opposite.
