Hi,
Am listening to one of my staff on the phone with her son who's bought (too many by the sound of it) Fifa "Coins" at great expense.
I don't have an xbox or Fifa but can you play the game perfectly well without buying coins by earning them or some other in-game currency you don't have to actually pay for?
I only play WoT and you can get buy without spending money if you live without premium ammunition and play lots of games to earn XP, I suppose in Fifa you can shortcut this with real money?

You can play the game just fine with the coins you get from playing, no need to buy any unless you want Messi or Ronaldo in your ultimate team
Employees son has just told her "you can't play properly without them"I know who the real Messi and Ronaldo are but do they influence the game significantly if you have them in your team or is it just pretty pictures? :-)
They will be for "Fifa Ultimate Team".
Coins are used to buy packs of players or individual players.
The game gives you a free team to play with initially and there is nothing stopping you playing with that team.
The kids just wants players to make his team better, but as many parents have found out, it can get very expensive.

This is what I am wondering- does the team get better, or just have the names or better real world players, does buying these famous players actually improve your teams performance in the game? (Do they have better shooting % or speed or some other property- can you Buy your way to winning or are the benefits just cosmetic)Could you get to the same level if you just played 1000+ games, does it level up with experience?
FWIW- I told my staff member that its not "needed" and she is less than impressed, currently using very unchristian language about her son :-)
I have to say its a great business model, you charge some £50 for software then get regular payments to unlock stuff already in the code you sold! Like in-app payments on phone games it s license to print money, wish I could code now!

It's exactly that. EA Games (who make Fifa) are the best (/worst depending how you look at it) at it as well. Each individual player in game has stats to best represent their real life attributes. So having better players makes it a little easier to score but most is still down to the individual player in control of the team and there is absolutely no need to buy the Fifa coins as you can earn them, albeit slowly, by playing anyway. For example, the first time I played a match online with my local club Stevenage, I beat someone playing as Real Madrid 5-2 proving you don't need better players to win.
The pack in ultimate team are a form of gambling. 7.5k coins for a premium pack that will mostly contain crap but if you're insanely lucky you could get an extremely rare card worth up to 10M (or more) coins. With coins selling on ebay for roughly £20 per million you can make some pretty expensive clubs.
My team in Ultimate team 12 was worth over £500 and that was nowhere near what it would have cost for the most expensive 11 cards on the market.
It is very easy but time consuming to earn coins by trading the cards. You search the trading market, buy low then sell high. Also, playing games earns you coins. There's no need to spend real money to get a good team on FIFA ultimate team, it's just a shortcut.
Many FIFA veterans have realised that the game boosts the stats of weaker teams and nerfs the good teams to make games more even (kinda like rubber-banding in racing games) so spending all that time/money on the best players doesn't suddenly make your team play better than everybody else's, search "ultimate team handicap" if you're interested in this.
Ultimate team is a mugs game IMO, I quit 2 FIFA's ago.

Unfortunately for a lot of people that buy coins, the players that they buy really don't help them - if you have no idea how to play, it doesn't matter if you have Messi or Carlton Cole up front. I play a fair bit of Ultimate Team when I get a chance and I'e spent about £15-20 on coins for Fifa 15 (to try to put me on a nearly even field), but I've played guys that must have paid a fortune (hundreds possibly, based on the going price for players and how much the coins cost) and beat them as they just bought a team before they learned to play.
If someone is half decent and has spent a lot on the team, it's very hard to play them.
A couple of nights ago, Fifa updated so all players now have a fixed buy it now price, which basically stops the coin transfers done via Ebay. Hopefully that will stay in Fifa 16 and stop people having ridiculous teams.
