Wheels for a heavy chap

Can anyone recommend wheels for a 120kg chap.

Wheelsmith offer approx 100kg wheels but not as heavy as my mate

I'd be more worried about those rear chainstays than the wheels...!

The best bet is probably to speak to one of the builders and ask for 32 spoke wheels.

Why in gods name dia a bloke that heavy spend 2500 quid on a lightweight bike? He'd be just as quick on a 1k ally bike with similar groupset...

Anyways, my vote goes for multi spoke Cx wheels.

Is the Canyon rated to carry that much mass? There are reports of the seat tube cracking which i would be concerned about.

As for wheels, some hand builts with at least 32 spokes.

Out of interest and because I'm sad... I checked and the weight limit is 120kg. Says right at the bottom of the page.

I'm 120kg.

I've got a set of Fulcrum Racing 7s on which I've done around 2,500 miles. Not so much as a sniff of a buckle, although I did manage to break a spoke yesterday. Hopefully the LBS will confirm that other than the spoke, they're absolutely fine, and I'll carry on happily with them.

The wheels on my Boardman CX Pro, on the other hand, were rather st. Weighed a bloody ton, but still had cracked rims after about 2,500 miles, so I had to replace them recently with a pair of Kinesis Crosslights which apparently don't have a weight limit on them. Too early to say how they'll map out, but as yet no issues. Those wouldn't be much use on that Canyon though, as they're disc hubs.

I've ridden upto 18stone on mavic open pro's 36H and they were bombproof even on some prety potholed roads. I have the standard 36h wheels that came on my focus now and they're holding up ok not 100% true but haven't worsened in a few hundred miles so I reckon they'll be reet after a tune so maybe it's the spoke count as well as being hand built that makes the difference.

This chap isn't a lardy, just very tall and very heavy. (Proper type rugby player!)

He has some hand builts on his spare bike with lots of spokes but was hoping or something a little sexier on his road bike.

Funnily from this thread I have ordered some spare wheels from wheeelsmith, so great shout there. £300 for decent rims on ultegra hus. Unreal!

They've been perfect for over 1500 miles, although I ride a MTB, I started off at 397lb so this guy knows how to make a strong wheel.

I had a chat with this chap last night. he gave options from £1000 - £2000 which are all unlimited weight and a 5yr guarantee on the rims if using enve. Also explained that Chris King hubs are used on tandems, a subtle way of saying they'll take the load

We have to wait a while as his 200 degree rims aren't in stock for a while. Great shout to speak to him. Thank you.

I've got tandem spokes and Novatec hubs on my wheels, obviously adds weight, but they are incredibly strong, he told me they were guaranteed for life (Stan's Flow rims), he was that confident I wouldn't damage them. Really impressed with him and what he does, a proper old school craftsman. Luckily my MTB wheels are a LOT cheaper than road bike wheels that he does.

Just seen those Strada wheels - I don`t get the radial spoke pattern - is there a reason for it? Or is it just a random image they`re using?

Think its just a default image- sure they would normally do normal x pattern unless you asked for radial... Not a fan either

No issue with radial spokes, very stiff laterally and slighter lighter spoke for spoke due to them being shorter.

Rear is probably radial on the non drive side and 3 cross on the drive side.

I guess it's a random image, the wheels are 32 spoke, not 24.

Regardless, there is no issue with radial spokes.
