What's wrong with plates?

I always thought it odd to have your food served on a slate. Seems lots of people are getting fed up with the fad of serving your food in strange ways like in a shoe.

Ok, some of that is stupid but the idea of eating off of or out of something other than a traditional plate or bowl isn't new... chicken in a basket anyone?

Depends very on the food and what the chef is trying to achieve in terms of added experience and visual appeal.

I first encountered chicken in the basket in a pub near Coventry back in the 1970s. I thought at the time whoever thought serving a greasy bit of roast chicken in a wicker basket was nuts, but the whole wooden block for a plate idea takes the biscuit. Barmy IMHO.

Makes me cringe whenever a restaurant serves food on anything other than a plate. (Anyone who says "what about bowls for soup", go ahead and punch yourself in the balls for me.)

I think chicken served in a basket may have its roots based on practicalities rather than artistic license.

I don't like the alternative serving methods either. Wooden blocks seem popular.

Although, deserts on skate work well as it keeps cooler than china / porcelain.

I once went for a lovely meal in Edinburgh where the main was served on a plate but the pudding on a slate, I promptly sent it back asking if they had run out or crockery and they might want to get a roofer in as something seemed to have fallen off....

We've been in a place in Sheffield where food is served in pot dog bowls.

The worst thing about slates is that they have a slightly undulating surface so it's virtually impossible to get at all your 5ml of jus before it's evaporated.
Spoon puree smears wind me up just as much as slates. Especially st-coloured painted smears
