Finally got around to trying to check this, so unscrewed the reservoir cap to find a really strange looking dipstick. Is the fluid meant to be between the two slight ridges on the stick? It almost doesn't look like a normal dipstick to me, its a cylinder shape which is cut in two along its length, with a couple of not very convincing ridges on the side that don't say anything such as min/max.

Anyone know what I should be doing to check the level?

Not sure mate, my power steering fluid normally ends up all over the engine bay, I'm sure mine has marks on the outside of the bottle unless you have got the later black one?

The marks on the "stick" are basically "hot" and "cold".
After wiping off the stick and screwing the cap fully on, remove it to check the level. When the fluid is fully hot (when checking it right after at least 25 miles of driving, say) the fluid level on the stick should not be above the upper notch. When everything is cold (after an overnight rest, say) the level should be at, or near, the lower notch.

Cheers
