Keep stepper or use Bosch PWM with after market ECU?

I've been talking to a few people and have received conflicting opinions. I would have thought that the PWM would be more up to date an reliable than the stepper, however, I also appreciate that some old technology just works.

It will be fitted to an after market ECU.

i've got neither on mine and it isn't too bad really after shaun mapped it (megasquirt). A bit lumpy for 10 minutes while warming up but other than that it's ok.

I dont have any on mine either. As said a little lumpy for the first few mjnutes and then its perfect.

Most aftermarket ecu's have the ability to automatically increase the ignition advance at idle to help with the cold idle. this is enough with the rover. Its one less problematic thing to worry about.

I thought the hole idea was to junk as much of the standard stuff
And drag it screaming into this century

I will be upset if that piece of misery is still fitted when I go to the dark side

Hi Chuffy, I've always found the Bosch valve supplied by Lloyds to be 100% reliable, it's still on the car and hasn't caused a single missed beat since it was fitted over two years ago. I'm sure Chimpongas will be along to reinforce this as he will have the same valve.

I've used all three methods .. the rover stepper is a great piece of kit that gets bad press because of other issues on the car. everyone automatically blames the stepper for any running issues on the car, it's become folklore ..

Cheers everyone, looks like there is lots of opinions!!!

I'll be sending the ECU and loom off to Lloyds this month, so will see what they say. As it was KateV8's (Mark's) ECU originally, I'll probably stick with a similar set-up. Lots to do, little time... less spare money!!!

I use a Bosch 2 wire PWM from a BMW 3 series and it works great. Using only 1 wire meant I kept more of the IO pins for other uses.

Rotary idle valves are more reliable and it is in fact the stepper motor that is the later technology I would have an idle valve over a stepper any day for instance BMW's and VAG stuff run for hundreds of thousands of miles with none of the cleaning bk's necessary they can still go faulty (hanging idle speeds) but IMO much less so, and it frees up more terminals for outputs etc
