After a quick opinion.

Been offered an extremely cheap manual 320d touring. 200,000 miles. £600

Problems are
- new wishbone compliance bushes needed
- engine feels like its producing no boost at all. I've googled and EGR valve, MAF or Vac leak seem to be the most common problems. No smoke from exhaust at all, starts on the button from cold.

Interior is in a bit of a state but with a decent clean it could be ok. My thinking is buy it, try the obvious stuff and if it doesn't work sell it on....

Worth a punt?

No boost could be a burst boost hose, I just had to change the upper one on the wifes 320d last month. Quite common apparently.
BMW want to sell you the upper and lower hoses complete with the aluminum tube that goes between them, however you can get individual silicon hoses from ebay for cheap.

I'd snap it up in a second for 600.

I've done a lot of stuff to ours over the years, so if you have a query just ask and I'll try to help.

Right choice, as above & your original post, check the basics first, after all, you now have a "bag of sand" in the bank if needs be to spend without blowing the value of the car.

The biggest thing you have on your side is "no smoke"

Would you happen to have a picture of the engine and be able to point out the bits I need to check. I've only got the forward engine cover off atm. Kinda hard to see the pipes. There seems to be a fair amount of longitudinal play in that oblong hard plastic boost pipe.

One problem that I've found but didnt know about... it wont lock. Luckily its at a secure car park! The key is dead from a locking point of view (but starts the car fine). It doesnt appear to do anything in the drivers door lock either. The locking button on the centre console works a treat so I can lock myself in!! ha.

The key might have a flat battery, If I remember correctly they are charged whilst they are in the ignition so if the car hasn't been used for a while it might fix itself once its in the ignition for a while and being used, failing that the battery is probably goosed.
If you have the front engine cover off, you would be as well take the back one off too to have a look, its easy to remove.
Have a look around for black greasy marks, this will indicate where your boost is going usually, the hose that went on mine is the hose that goes into the EGR valve on the intake manifold (right hand side top)
If you find that and follow it down onto the alloy pipe, you will see the other hose elbow at the bottom of that going into the intercooler.
Other issues they have are the breather which is on top of the rocker cover, this clogs/breaks down which causes some smoke and puffs of it when you pull away. A modified part is available from BMW, mine ran loads cleaner and smoother when I replaced it.
Also, be aware that these have two thermostats. One normal one and one for the EGR at the front of the head in a plastic housing.
If it starts to run cold, replace both of these as the water just takes the path of least resistance.
Also, the dreaded swirl flap issue. I removed mine myself and its easy enough to do, although you do have to remove the inlet manifold. You can buy kits but I just Araldited self tapping screws into the shaft holes with the heads on the outside so they couldn't fall in, worked a treat. No wonder they break up and fall in, they are made out of the thinnest flimsiest steel with tiny screws holding them onto the shaft.
Heres mine..

Good stuff thanks for the tips. Will take a few pics of the engine bay.

One thing I absolutely hate... Is the wheels. Worst ever fitted to an E46? It needs 2 rear tyres as they are bang on the limit, can't decide whether to replace the tyres with new or try and pick up a second hand set of alloys....

Here's the old tank:

Fixed.

Cleaned the EGR, Played around with the Vacuum hoses and disconnected the MAF. Pretty damn chuffed!

Now I just need to replace the wishbone bush, get the remote central locking working and i've got a good little runner! Put a rear tyre on it at the weekend as the old was illegal. Oh and now its clean. wow.... the amount of st in there. Ended up getting a bucket!!

Hey man, I wanna ask you an advice. I have a problem on my e46 m47tud20. the vacuum reservoir pipe connector broke, so i connected the vacuum line directly to the solenoid(controling the westgate). if i do that i have boost till 2.5k rpm after that engine makes no boost and no torque at all. and there is a sound of air leak from intercooler coming. if i disconnect the vacuum pipe(leaves the westgate open at all times) then i have boost after 3k rpm. no sound of leak. after 3k rpm its like perfectly fine but before it has lag. my guess is that the intercooler line is leaking and imma check that tomorrow but if thats a problem then how does it get enough boost on high rpms when i disconnect the vacuum?
