Fitted 4 new Goodyears to my 2012 RRS in October, and the car has just failed its MOT due to balding on the inner sides of the rear tyres. WTF? The fronts are fine with plenty of tread left.

This doesnt sound right?

I called them back to ask LR to look into it. Both the rears are reading 5mm/5mm/0mm on outer/middle/inner. He suggested an wheel-alignment (£99).

Warranty runs out at the end of March, so I wonder if they might make this one drag out until after the warranty period?!

Have you had any ball joints replaced while in your ownership?

Dont know. We had major work done just before Xmas. Some rear metal ring wore away and snapped. This caused a catalogue of events, which led to the replacement of both parts of drive shaft, the transmission and the clutch.

Clutch?

Anyhoo, the chassis is very sensitive to alignment and is adjustable every which way. It could be out because of wear, it could be out because it's had a thump, or it could be out because it wasn't properly aligned after whatever work you had done.

A proper alignment - all four wheels, tight tolerance mode etc should solve it.

Only the central 75% needs to have 1.6mm, the inner, or outer, edges can be as bald as a coot.

Thats not what the MOT said. Failed.

Not under warranty, and not accepted as a result of the previous work. Given its only £99 for alignment work, I'll just pay and be done with it.

True, but central 75% only leaves 12.5% for each "bald as a coot" edge so most will fail MOT unless the wear really is confined to the VERY edge.
