sharing files over networks

How to make sure network is working and setup correctly:

and this should show you how to share the folders:

I've been attempting to do this for 2 weeks now, and finally got the solution I wanted.
Select the C: drive (or whatever drive is storing your music, and right click and select sharing. On network sharing and security, put a tick in both the check boxes, and type a name in the (like PC C drive) that is no more than 12 characters long. There may be a couple of sub options needed but they should be self explanatory.
Do this on both PCs.
There's a couple of other steps, but can't remember directly. You'll notice in that box, there is an option to Learn more about sharing and security....click it.
There's some really easy text to folow, and an option saying if both computers are on the same network (yours are as they are both part of the same wireless lan)
There's an option to click on:
If your computer is connected to a network domain, use this procedure:
Step-by-step procedure
If your computer is connected to a workgroup, use this procedure:
Step-by-step procedure
Try the first one, and let me know how you get on and where you get up to, if this doesn't sufficiently show the way.
Good luck, and its not that tricky....XP does a good job of making it reasonably simple, just follow the wizards.

In the network settings on each computer you need to have both the following options enabled (be careful with this if you are connected to the internet - you want to make sure your firewall etc blocks this traffic).
"Client for Microsoft Networks"
"File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks"
You should then be able to share them to each other.

do you know the name of both computers?
in windows explorer, select tools>map network drive
in the box that pops up type \\remotecomputer\c$
that should now have connected the remote computers c: to the drive letter defaulted in the drive box (usually z: ). So now all you need do is navigate to the folder on the remote computer and then drop the files that you want to copy.
This is all assuming that you have the correct security rights. If your username isnt valid on the remote machine, it will prompt you for one.

Okay. Let's start with at the beginning.
1. Are both machines are on the same IP subnet (ie the first 3 parts of the IP address are the same).
2. Is a firewall switched on for these interfaces? It might be blocking the traffic.
3. When sharing you need to tick the box that allows other computers on the same network to attach to your shared drives. (In the "Sharing" tab for the folder select "Share this folder on the network).

...and last but not least, you need to make sure that you have some sort of guest account so that the remote PC may logon...
Also - are file and print sharing turned on? I would also disable the windows firewall (if you have sp2 installed), just until you get the networking sorted...
