Very interesting.

Oddly there has been no comment from the camera representatives on that site.

Perhaps drivers can now observe the road conditions and other traffic ahead now that they don't have to keep having to look down at the speedometer, in a nutshell, less distration!!!

Codswollop!

If a driver isn't able to judge speed, together with driving and looking at the speedo, perhaps they shouldn't really be on the road...

The excuse is old and poor...i'm afraid Chris...

But they do....

Perhaps not as many as the Government would have you believe, granted....but they certainly don't COST lives.....

The old business about looking at speedos all the time is bollox...especially for someone who's got even a little bit of driving experience under their belt. If you are in the proper gear etc for the road you are on....your speed can be determined by accellerator sense...

I guess it's an argument none of us could win, as statistics mean nothing these days, and statistics are what polices are based upon.,, anyway, I don't think it is bollox in the respect of concentrating on the speedo,, even a momentary lapse of concentration (of which looking at the speedo could certainly cause), can lead to accidents, wouldn't you agree?

I don't agree.

Brief glances away from your road, to look at your speedometer, and then back at the road, actually HELP you.

It excercises your eyes, and the re-focusing help to combat minor eye fatigue in addition to keeping your vision clearer...

I think the point about stats is correct. Lies, lies and statisics etc etc..

All that I do know is that roads that are visited by the camera van have less RTC (on the whole), and a lower overall average speed of drivers, after a very short amount of enforcement. (I'm only talking about the county that I live and work in, as I can't comment on others, but presume they will be very much the same).....

It boils down to common sense....
There are plenty of mile after mile roads, where you can 'boot it'...safe from children running in the road, juctions that are hidden etc etc...

These roads rarely have speed cameras on, and should be used for the 'testing' of ones skills and vehicle.

Where are these roads? Maybe a map on PH of them?

But you must agree that there has been plenty of reclassification of roads and reductions of 60s to 40s or lower. Many of these seem ridiculously low for the road conditions. Joe Public ignores them and his respect for speed limits as safety features is eroded. Oxon seems to suffer worse for this.

And before you point out that there may have been KSIs that we are unaware of, there are brand new bypasses near me that have had speed cameras from the outset. So there could be no adverse safety records of these roads.

Ever tried to squint at a TVR Speedo!!! lol (only kidding, btw!)
I talked about the momentary lapse because that's exactly what happened to me once, and wrote a poor woman's car off!! Admittedly, I hadn't long passed my test, and I looked away for less than a second at the radio, but that was enough time for me not to notice the lady's brake lights, and I went into her!

Oh how very true, and we don't want to lose them - nor should we.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Perhpas Roadcop (or whatever HE'S calling himslef these days) hasn't seen the "naked roads" idea. Less distractions, more concentration.

Evidently many drivers, including myself, can't do all of the above. Surely a good case for awarding a driver training course rather than 3 points.

Roadcop it that really you?

Just joking....I have to say I agree with everthing you have said there! Or would do if I knew what RTC meant? I know RTA but Road Traffic.......?

I do agree with " Brief glances away from your road, to look at your speedometer, and then back at the road, actually HELP you" etc but does the average housewife (sorry girls, stereotype I know, prepare yourselves!) on valium, driving her X5 to school to pick up the children, whilst wondering what to make to tea tonight and whether she should finish her affair with her husbands boss or not, do this? It's a shame but probably not.

Back to my point that highly trained drivers with well maintained performance cars should be allowed to go (say) an extra 20 mph faster in 60 and 70 limits than the rest of you lot!!! Obviously 30s should drop to 20 for everyone outside schools, housing estates and Gone's parent's back garden (JOKE!) etc.

Who said "Many a true word spoken in jest!!"

Most cameras do nothing of the sort and you know it, RC. A small number of the ones I see are well sited, the rest are not. The effect of most cameras is to cause a stream of traffic travelling at say 50mph on a 40 mph three lane dual carriageway (e.g. Hendon Way) to slow to 40 mph for the camera and immediately resume 50 mph afterwards.

I see plenty of examples of cameras placed on former NSL roads in the prime accelerating/overtaking zones, but not close to dangerous bends.

The whole camera dogma is rubbish, but you won't admit it. If they were all placed sensibly, then I would not object to them.

Interesting , what is there to hide .
Statistics were used to justify their initial placement, shirley its a case of live by the sword........

Roadcop (or anyone for that matter)

If you can prove, 100% that a specific camera on its own saved a life whereas if it had not been there it would not have saved a life, I will donate £25 to a charity of choice.

That is a lot of money for me at the moment so i dont take that saying lightly.
