Smelly , stinky Aircon - 997.2

Hi there I have a 997.2 and the air con absolutely stinks - it is about to have its major service - I asked the OPC to do a pollen filter change (no problem) and I was advised elsewhere to help solve the issue , I should also get an antibacterial wash done. Unfortunately the OPC is unwilling to do this as it isn't a Porsche approved process. As such , does anyone know if this is the right thing to do to cure the stinky air con and if so , can I do it myself / what product is best to do this ? Thanks in advance for any tips - cheers R

You cant get better than a KWIK FIT FITTER. Pretty sure they offer it with or without a regas.

Get it done. I was very ill (at one point they thought my symptoms were meningitis). I basically looked and felt terrible, so much so that they refused me entry to the waiting room of my local GP.

My Doc was pretty certain the previous days 200 mile drive, aircon on, I'd inhaled something awful from my 'dirty smelly' aircon.

In 24 hours I went from well to having flu like symtopms and a rash all over my body and face. I was off work for over a week ....... that didn't cause any real problems, no one would work or get near me anyway.

Aircon on, full recirc, max temp, for 10 mins, then min temp for 10 mins, then max again. Will kill most bacteria prety quickly. Or you can get a kit from halfords to kill the bacteria. Simple and cheap

It is best to use the aircon once a week to stop the build up of bacteria in the system.

Few years ago I happened to see what a main dealer was using to 'clean' the aircon. It was this:

Works a treat...but be careful where you place it as have been told it could stain some interior parts of the spray is in direct contact.

Replace the cabin air filter. Then road test the car and use the A/C to see if the smell is still present.

If it is the problem is not bacteria but mold/mildew.

There are treatments for this but I have no experience using them. The Porsche dealer should have some experience with this. The refusal to do a "antibacterial wash" as not being a Porsche approved process or service I can understand as the problem is not bacteria, but the OPC should have volunteered this info and then told you what it could do for you. That it didn't suggests that you may have to search out a good A/C shop that works on high end cars and speak to it about the odor and what is required to get rid of it.

Odd since I think my OPC actually wanted to do exactly that (a few years back) on my 986.

OPC mentioned a refresh at £50 to do it and another email said -

"Porsche also recommend that the air conditioning is serviced every 2 years

Which includes a full discharge and recharge of the system, checking for leaks, anti bacterial agent is added to clean and sanitise the interior components, the air con service is £199 including Vat."

I'd recharge the system as needed and just use the aircon bomb if it got smelly.
